A moon colony would be vastly more difficulty than a mars colony. Mars has all the basic necessities to sustain human life inside a habitat.

A more reasonable first step would be industrialization of space via robotic mining ships/factories. We need to be able to provide volatiles and material resources without spending a fortune pushing the raw materials out of Earth's gravity well.

Industrialization is only a few years out. Serious investors are already developing the technology to mine rare earth minerals/volatiles in the asteroid belt.

I have to disagree with your first statement. A moon settlement is much more practical. Should a disaster occur, help will arrive in 72 hours. Should a disaster occur on Mars...good luck settlers!

Afaik, there is nothing worth mining on Mars. But the moon has valuable He-3 deposits for possible fusion applications.
