Fate/Zero first.

There are a lot of blood relationships in Fate/Stay Night that the participants are not aware of.

I agree watch Fate/zero first, it's the prequel to fate/stay night.

There are arguments for and against both options. Might as well stick with Stay/Night now since you're already watching it and then watch Zero. Neither option is incorrect, imo.

Fate/Zero because the events are first chronologically.

Wars have been frequently waged trying to answer this question.

There will be spoilers both ways, as there are shared characters. But the default would be FSN first, then FZ. FZ was written as a prequel after the fact so it anticipates you knowing a bit about FSN, while the reverse isn't as true.

But either way can work, there'll never be a consensus so just pick one and run with it.

The author of Fate/Zero has said on several occasions that Stay Night should be read first.

Fate Zero, far better viewing experience if you're not bothering with any of the VN stuff. Plus trying to watching FSN on its own without any context is horrendous.

best viewing order is to READ the Visual novel of Fate/Stay Night first.

Paring that you don't want to do that, Watch the UBW anime first (cause it's well done), then wait till heaven's feel is released for viewing, maybe (I a really mean maybe) watch the DEEN 2006 anime to get a basic understanding of the fate route, and THEN watch Fate/Zero.

Reasoning, Fate/Zero Spoils MAJOR plots points before they are supposed to be revealed when reading the visual novel. (It's like watching star wars in chronological order, that fate the Vader is Luke's father is completely spoiled in episode 3, and it WILL, not maybe, ruin the scene as it was intended to be seen.)

in summery:
Prequels should not be watched before the original.

People are just lazy, just report the thread next time and they will be redirected to the other one.

I'm just going to quote a very helpful post:

Well, to be accurate, this is how it works :

See, the original visual novel that the anime(s) are based on had three "routes" or in other words storylines.

These storylines are : Fate, Unlimited Blade Works, and Heaven's Feels. Each storyline essentially has the same characters and premise, but the plots are different.

Now the 2006 anime adapts the "Fate" storyline. Now, most people who have read the visual novel dislike the 2006 anime quite a bit. So in otherwords, many believe the best way to experience that storyline is to read it in the visual novel. I personally agree with this sentiment, but if you don't plan to read the visual novel, then you ought to watch the 2006 anime. Just keep in mind many agree that the 2006 anime didn't do a sufficient job on portraying certain characters as much as they should have.

Now the current anime (2014), adapts the Unlimited Blade works storyline.

Finally, Ufotable plans to release a bunch of movies that will be adapting the Heaven's Feel storyline.

Also, there is Fate/Zero, a series released after fate stay night that is set 10 years before f/sn. I highly recommend you do no watch this one until you experience the Heaven's Feel storyline (whether be it through the visual novel or through the upcoming movies). Reason being a fair bit of stuff in fate/zero won't make as much sense without reading F/SN, and furthermore fate/zero spoils alot of the twists in f/sn. In other words, Fate/Zero assumes you've read F/SN .

Now for reasons, the original visual novel had you experience the storyline in the following order : Fate, UBW, and HF.

So really the easiest way to ensure that you've got the "complete" package so to speak, is :

A) Read the fate route of the visual novel, watch the 2014 anime, and then the Heaven's Feel movies when they come out. Watch Fate/Zero. However, I personally reccomend reading the entirety of the visual novel b/c it has a lot extra stuff the animes may not show, and plus it has alternate endings that are pretty cool.

If option A does not suit your fancy then :

B) Watch the 2006 anime, the current anime, the Heaven's Feel movies when they come out, then Fate/Zero.

Thanks for providing the links. I've moved this over to Advice, Info, Recommendations to join them.

My general belief is, as someone stated upthread, prequels are not normally intended to be watched first and you'll get a more satisfied viewing by watching things in the order in which they were created.

Sure but the anime is a different story. They add in things in UBW as if it's assuming you've watched Zero.
