In a world where aliens have invaded Edo Period Japan, skyscrapers, trains and motor bikes have replaced the simple life of Earth inhabitants. One man however, still carries the soul of a samurai, Gintoki Sakata, otherwise known as Yorozuya Gin-san. As reckless as he is, Gintoki carries his own resolve and is ready to take on any challenge with his fellow companions!

After nearly 300 episodes, Gintama is still going strong, and for good reason. Its genderbending arc is filled with friendly fan service in the form of canon genderbent characters, but, through humor, it also imparts intriguing social commentary on gender. This season also explores the enigmatic protagonist’s past, building upon his character by showing the actions he is willing to take even when his life is at risk. This is all while providing fascinating information concerning real-life seppuku practices, which allows anyone to understand Gintama’s plot arcs without much prior knowledge of Edo Japan. Most of all, between these (somewhat) serious arcs are several standalone episodes packed full with what makes Gintama so successful: crude, charming humor.

If anything has been off about this season so far, it has been a few of the references. Some of them are obscure for non-Japanese audiences, such as the ones focusing on games never released outside of Japan. This could make it difficult for some to understand the points Gintama is trying to make, especially when such parodies form the basis of entire episodes. Still, the humour is more often a hit than a miss, and with such vulgar, yet strangely loveable characters, Gintama is a series to keep watching until its unforeseeable end.

I agree wholeheartedly, Gintama is the anime that got me into subs and to become a CR member. It is the only anime I know that can flip-flop from light hearted slapstick, to deadly serious drama, to jokes of very nearly any description to awesome fight scenes all within a few minutes and have it feel so smooth.

I love the jokes, the fights, the characters, the self referential and self mocking nature of it, the fourth wall breaking and really just how different it feels, both in tone and execution. One other nice thing is the tightness of the arcs, they are all short and well executed telling a good story without needed to pad it out to 12 episodes plus. Most Gintama arcs are three or four episodes long, making it very viable to wait for the whole arc to come out and treat yourself to watching the whole thing like a movie.
