Believe it or not... more relevant than SAO vs .hack, or SAO vs Log Horizon.

Would you mind explaining this to me? Mind you that I haven't seen a single episode of SAO, so as far as things go, the only thing I see in common with both titles is that they both fall under the science fiction genre.
And even uder that, they are completely different subgenres and I'm under the impression they are both targeted at different audiences.

So, if you don't mind, I'd like to see a good comparison between the two titles (who are both more than a good decade apart in production) and not just some bombshell in hopes of finding yourself a popcorn moment where CR dukes it out for your personal enjoyment.

Well, SAO is about people trapped in an environment and they must form a functioning community in order to get home safely. The majority of the episodes do however focus on teenager drama and primarily the heroic efforts of a single teenager.

.hack//sign and in fact the vast majority of the .hack franchise is largely void of anyone trapped in a game or anywhere at all. .hack//sign has one character trapped in the game, and while the plot is about this character, the vast majority of the show focuses on characters who are not. It is more about their interpretation of what is happening to this person and with the game itself. For every other case with .hack// it's never stated whether the people are trapped inside the game just that they were caused to go unconscious while playing the game. Every focal characteris another player freely able to move around.

Log Horizon again is not about survival because it is impossible for people to die. It is more about basically making sense of an odd situation and handling political matters in a strange land in which you have vastly superior strength to anyone. It's almost exactly Overlord or GATE.

infinite Ryvius is teenagers trapped in an environment where they can die, dealing with drama and clique issues, elitism, etc while trying to get home. Many more of the issues presented in IR coincide with SAO than the issues in either .hack or LH do. The only thing those have in common is that they take place in a MMORPG, the stories themselves are vastly different.

That is indeed a good comparison of the scenario in both anime.
That said, my preference goes to Infinite Ryvius, mainly because I feel that Infinite Ryvius is the more mature anime by not relying on heroic antics from a single or hand full of characters, but going more into the politics of the situation the teenagers find themselves in after episode 1.
While IR definitely has a main character, there is no main hero, there is right and wrong but there's no good and evil and in the end you find yourself sympathizing with most of the characters and their personal situations.

Mind you, like I said I haven't watched a single SAO episode yet, and to be fair, I'll just go and read the light novels, but from what I read about the anime and at the end of your synopsis we're still talking two majorly different series.

Drama, clique issues, elitism
Sounds like ten boatloads of other teen dramas because when you're a teen, guess what you're facing?

I've seen both series and while IR was a long time ago I recall it to be vastly different in tone

nope nope nope. infinite-ryvius teenagers strnaged on spaceship. it's more like Lord of the flies.

While SAO is about a bunch of people stuck in a MMO. and then it mostly about one Gary Stu... with alot more side char which we never find all that much about.

and infinite-ryvius wraps up all it plots in 26 eps.

Been a while since I've watched infinite-ryvius I should watch it again...

Not saying they are the same, just saying that IR and SAO have more similarities than SAO does with LH or especially .hack//. This was actually meant as a bit of an ironic thread. There were many SAO vs joke threads popping up, so I wanted to make one that seems like it should be a joke thread but can actually also be a serious thread.

Personally IR is much more emotional than SAO, and even though it literally doesn't get as dark as SAO, the significance of the darkness in IR is much more powerful.

I'll agree that ir is more emotional that SAO... and the same kids trapped in a strange place and have to figure out a way to get home. You could also say that for Alice in wonderland as well.

Did someone once say there are 7 kinds of stories and everything else is a take on those 7 stories?

Never seen Infinite Ryvius.

I'm more a Log Horizon guy.

And I say that while sitting here at my computer with my Sinon figure staring me in the face... with a rifle.
