Post Reply Muslim Teen Is Detained Over Homemade Clock
Posted 9/19/15 , edited 9/19/15
Considering kids get in trouble for eating their Pop-Tart into the shape of a gun or twirling their pencils in a way that is arbitrarily deemed "gun motions", I am not surprised a pencil case that looks like an equipment hard case with a large seven segment display mounted in it would raise alarm bells. Though I think the arrest was a bit much unless their was evidence he actually intended to use it as a hoax bomb and not just a poor choice of case for a clock he apparently didn't actually make.

TV doesn't count, I imagine.

Wasn't that long ago we had to stop selling a model of tracfone here in the states because it was very easy to make into a remote trigging device.

Hell, look at the unibomber's un-complex bombs that look more like two year old playing with construction junk nailing cut-offs into toys with nails sticking out.

Bomb like this killed 3, wounded another 23.

Was the Unabomber Shia or Sunni?

Worse. Physics and math.

Nothing new here sadly...

Muslim isn't a race, it's a follower of Islam which is a religion.

Islamophobic is the term I've seen used in cases like this. Race could have been a factor, but I don't know it's hard to prove.

Most Texans are mixed. I do warn you, you call a brown Texan a Mexican, and you will get your ass beat.

OK, so to anyone complaining about the 'suitcase'... no it's not. That is a specialized case in which you can make custom electronics. It is self contained and portable so you don't break it. It's basically the same in practicum to those large tubes artists use to carry their art and table top gamers use to carry their miniatures. While this might LOOK odd to a normal person, the child in question was in an electronics class, he would have brought this same 'OMG suitcase' in to school every day. The teacher could have, should have, easily recognized it. In fact from my own knowledge of electronics I could see from the photo there were only electronics and exactly what the odd case was.

I hate the statement 'to be fair..' because it means you're about to dismiss common rationality in order to justify base reactionary emotions.

The contents of the suitcase are:
-Two circuit boards
-LCD display
-Transistor
-Wires
-Small cloth thingy

Oh, and Hollywood has wires and glowing digital displays and random circuit boards all over bombs because they look good on camera. A real bomb would have few very sort wires, a high volt battery, a blasting cap, a small chip cell phone or modified watch as a timer or remote trigger, and some form of explosive either pressed into a pipe or packed under shrapnel. This project looked as much like a 'bomb' as a plastic Halloween mask looks like a real monster.

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B001BXZ28K/ref=twister_B00K7W4IPE?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1 It's sold as a pencil case. Equipment hard cases no doubt inspired the design.

Personally, I always put my tinkering in plastic enclosures.

It happens to white kids too. I think it got blown up over the media just because of his race and religion. All and all, it's better to be safe than sorry.

Yeah if it looked like that I'm pretty sure anyone would mistake it as a bomb.

The police and teachers were probably not trained to recognize bombs at first glance, obviously. They were not acting out of maliciousness, but out of the concern for safety. All we see is the surface when there are probably more things to consider from the POV of the police officers and school staff.

Although this is not a good excuse to be openly racist, I can't say that they are the evil and worthless scumbags that people seem to be saying they are. There have been so many reports of Muslim bombers that it's hard, impossible, really, to not look suspiciously at a Muslim kid who brought a crude-looking electronic thing to school when none of the other kids seem to be doing it. If bringing homemade clocks was normal and done by many other kids at the school, then I would be more willing to call the police and school staff out on the extreme nature of their reactions.

My only criticism is that they failed to handle a bomb threat properly. They didn't evacuate students or anything. If they recognized it as a "hoax bomb," then they knew it was not actually a bomb? If they thought it was a real bomb, they should have reacted accordingly.
