So, how do we sift through all of the anime to find ones appropriate for the target age group of our audience?
There are a lot of misleading summaries and art styles out there and the best way I have found is to actually *watch* a few episodes and troll the internet for reviews.
Other than that, perhaps relying on someone who considers anime a specialty of theirs?

Yeah, it seems that a lot of anime fans are unaware of or in denial about what constitutes objectionable content, making age-appropriate recommendations somewhat questionable.

This CR group has shows categorized and rated (G, PG, R, etc), very useful resource:

AnimeNewsNetwork's encyclopedia of anime uses a basic description of the show's objectionable content (none, mild, significant, etc), it's not really too useful but here's a link anyway:

FYI, I use MyAnimeList and IMDB.
MyAnimeList lists the rating, genre, etc on a sidebar; you can also find reviews and recommendations on similar titles.
On IMDB, search for your title; once on that page, scroll past "cast" to "storyline", under which is "parents guide" which you can click on for viewer submitted, in detail descriptions of content which are helpful.
