Good for them, after brawling in the diet, they need to vent their rage somewhere.

It's about time.

Japan can potentially be very helpful in armed conflict. Obviously, we've seen what they were capable of in WW2. No sense in not using their power now that they are allies. The only reason people don't like it is because they're still thinking about the imperialistic Japan of WW2.

I dunno, after watching GATE, I'm pretty sure they will turn on us and attack the Americans first.

Wait..they can do that?

I thought part of the whole losing WWII thing, was that they can't have an active army outside their home waters?
Or did that have an expiration date?

That's only if Trump becomes president and does something stupid.

Don't they need permission from the UN for that?

Nah. When Japan's constitution was drafted, they (being the Japanese who drafted the document with help from the ruling Allied power) added Article 9, renouncing war. That was something that wasn't legally or forcefully enforced upon them.

Now that Japan's it's own independent country that can amend its own laws and constitution, the current government has opted to "reinterpret" that article to allow Japanese forces to be deployed overseas. Not that they haven't been deployed before. They were on humanitarian missions in the Middle East in the early 2000's. It's just that now they can deploy troops in actual combat.

Are the Japanese public in favor of this change? I don't know. Last I heard of any legit polling among the general population showed a little majority for keeping Article 9 as it's always been. Don't quote me on that though.

Obama and Abe are very, very, very close allies. That's the reason.
