It's kindof amusing to me that a plot element in a few 90's near-future sci-fi anime is coming true about when expected.
Except without the mecha.

So are we gonna now have Japanese military bases in the US?

Why would the Japanese have military bases in the U.S? I mean I guess they could, but I don't really see any reason for it.

Just a twist on the fact that the Japanese have U.S. military bases. They're quite old though. And the majority have been closed down by now.

Its about time. Every country has a right to defend itself, and defense sometimes includes having the ability to strike at your enemies instead of waiting for them to invade. While I do find it unlikely for a significant war to occur, especially because China'e economy is going down again, China has stolen small islands from both Vietnam and the Philippines, and with them building airstrips on artificial islands, tensions in the South China Sea are rather high, and Russia and Japan still are at odds as well.

It would be nice to have an ally that will actually help out. Other than the British, the European Union does not seem willing to send any significant force to peacekeeping zones, and the small numbers they do send don't help much. Remember what the Dutch soldiers did at Srebrenica, during the Bosnian War? They just stood back and let the Serbian Army into a UN designated "Safe Zone" and an estimated 8,000 civilians were massacred as a result. Because the Dutch did not come under fire themselves they refused to hold off the Serbs.

The only thing I am worried about is that a more militarized Japan may create more tensions with South Korea, whereas both countries should focus more on China and North Korea. North Korea, while not that much of a threat, has landed agents on Japan's home islands and kidnapped civilians before, and their leader might be too much of an idiot to know that to start a real war with either country would be very bad for his.

I don't like it at all.

I don't trust the Japanese whatsoever when it comes to politics, history, and military.

They've had a very bad track record on antagonizing their neighbors.
Considering how influential the right wing nut jobs are in Japan, the average Japanese clearly cares very little about foreign policy.

these aren't the days of difficult island hopping anymore

they couldn't pull off that shit even if they wanted to

They'll get their asses kicked in the first conflict they get into. Japan hasn't known war for 80 years, and their army is EXTREMLY inexperienced. They'll run back to banana island after the first few shots. I gaurentee this.

Ufortunately, it's not as different than other major countries. Bills are passed because the current government wants them passed.

Screw this, the Japanese are just going to be used as canon fodder for the West's proxy wars. This is BS... Its important to remember that Japan is still an occupied country and has to do what the West tells them even if the people don't too. :^( If anything Japan fits in better with the Russia/China Eurasian alliance.

Probably not, but you might see them here for exercises.
German Troops have been visiting and running military exercises (winter ops) here in Canada for years, as they are part of NATO.
