I'm a huge fan of Ghost in the shell and it's sequel, but I like it more for it's deep thematic elements and the unique perspective on the idea of cybernetics it offers. I started watching Stand Alone Complex, and it's not bad by any means, but it seems to be just an action show. Does it get more like Ghost in the Shell later on, or is it just having fun with the characters? Also, is the Arise series more of this, or does it go back to the style of the original movies?

If you're talking about the first movie, SAC isn't bluntly as thematic. It is more action oriented, but they do present at many times the same concepts and questions the first movie does. It's just you get more time with each character hence a less mysterious feel to them. You might prefer the second season over the first.

If you're referring to the second movie, no, SAC is nothing like it and almost nothing else is.

For Arise, it's less like the first movie than other materials. Personally (and I do own the Japanese BDs of it), it wasn't very good. I guess in the same vein that I didn't really like the second movie all that much either.

I've moved this to the Advice, Info, Recommendations forum.

I enjoyed SAC a lot but while it touches on those themes from the movies it never goes very deep into them.

I, personally, think Arise is pretty awful. It doesn't do much with big themes and seems to be just going through the motions of even the action stuff to pander to existing fans. Yawn.

Now I'll step away and wait for someone who liked Arise to stand up for it.

SAC is nowhere near as heavy handed as the Masamune Shirow GITS. But it still touches on ethical and political subjects. The cast, especially Kusanagi, are a lot more down to earth in it as well.

Yes it's worth watching. It's a well made series with a good story and a fantastic soundtrack. The animation is for the most part well done too. Personally prefer the second season and in that season you get to see the Major fleshed out a bit more with her past and how long she's been around. The first season is sort of like the first film discussing ideas of the soul and dealing with the good and bad of hackers. If you like GitS then go ahead and pick up both seasons you'll probably get a lot out of it. There is also a SAC movie called Solid State Society which is okay. It takes place after season two of the series so it's worth picking up for a bit extra.

Arise is a similar idea to SAC a lot of action and comedy though it does touch on various themes of robotics, spirituality and politics. Just give things a chance and watch it. I think both SAC and Arise start off a bit slow and by the numbers but they do pick up.
