i think your hobby is only an issue when you become too obsessed with it

because then it starts to affect and/or take over your life, you lose sight of other things that are or at least should be more important in other people's eyes, you can lose sight of reality, and you can annoy, distract, or gross out other people who aren't into the same things as you. For instance, people who go about discussing their waifus are generally very, very annoying to someone who isn't into that very niche culture/sub-culture, and the problem comes when you make no effort to draw boundaries and whatnot.

Likewise, someone who is a really big sports fan could be super annoying too. They could gamble with their sports money, spend way too much time online watching sports or reading up on it, get too defensive about their favorite teams, argue with people too much, spend too much money on sports clothing, collectibles, etc., and maybe they never shut up about sports, don't spend enough time doing non-sports related things, and let sports influence their life way too much. This kind of person would be really obnoxious and annoying to me just as a weeb could be.

The only difference is that sports are waaaay more popular than anime and way more morally accepted than the practice of having waifus and figurines and whatnot. I guess that and the stereotype that a lot of weebs/otakus are NEETs or otherwise just people who don't fit into society and don't make an effort to, so they're kind of outcasting themselves that way. (And said stereotype has plenty of truth, but you can also love anime and manga and be a working adult or a hard-working student or something, you don't have to be a stereotypical nerd who lives with his parents way past adulthood or something.)

Ultimately, a word is just a word, sure, but if someone's calling you it, consider not being offended but rather just taking it as an opportunity to reflect on yourself and what you can do. Often times, people just want you to fit in more and avoid conflict, and when they feel you're not, they call you out for it. It's really as simple as keeping your hobby or hobbies to yourself and not getting too passionate about it besides with people who are equally as passionate about it as you.

In a way it might seem like I'm saying "censor yourself" or "you should feel ashamed" or something, but it's really not. People are allowed to be themselves so long as they don't piss off others, that's pretty much how "freedom of speech" works. Whether it's anime, manga, sports, clothing, your favorite foods, or something else, as long as you're not bothering anyone else or being stupid, you probably have no reason to feel bad about what you do, and anyone who calls you a name is just spewing empty words. In which case they're the loser, so let them be. *shrugs*

Everything you are saying is pot on, except this one.
You are asking the impossible. Not matter how you worded or nice you try to be. Somebody is going to get piss off a you. My solution is this. You mad ? Good because that your own fault and deal with it yourself. I no going to apologize for anything. I seen people getting mad a other people for just being passionate about the stuff they are into.

don't piss off others,

How do we define this ? A lot of people tell me I need to get friends or a girlfriend, and marry. I don"t have friends or a girlfriend, or like marriage because of one reason only. Takes time away from my hobbies. meaning my enjoyment. I only live once, so I going to enjoy my life to the fullest. My way, no other people way. And people think I am obsessed with anime because I watch pretty much only anime. People seen to have a hard time understanding I don't like live action in general. I do however like movies like Hellboy. But they seen to have selective memory. So to me there no such thing has being too obsessed. Is how you manage that obsession. If doesn't affect your sour of income and doesn't affect you personal health. Or your responsibilities. Then I see no problem.

too obsessed

I had been called one once when a friend of mine from work found out I like to watch anime and she immediately called me a weeaboo. I looked at her with confusion as it was the first time I ever heard that word. She retracted the statement as she said I didn't act like one. That was the first and only time I've ever been called one.

My friend went over to Japan to work as an English teacher. After what he's told me, I think I am happy that I was raised in the USA. It seems that the Japanese school system is really strict and stressful. So far as to regulate how kids can spend their free time outside of school.

I think it's attributed to those who butcher the Japanese culture by assuming it. This is supposed to stem from watching anime. I wouldn't worry about what people call you, to be honest.

Weeaboos are typically the type of anime fan that like to try to integrate the Japanese culture that they witness in anime into their own personal lives because they think it is superior. So if you start buying Pokky because you want to be like them, start saying "nyah" "arigato" "gomen" etc, in every day talk, or anything else along those lines, you are a weeb. I typically separate fans between the "Otaku" type, or the "Weeaboo" type. Otaku would just be a huge fan of anime and related stuff, but doesn't try to pretend like they are Japanese or anything of the sort. While weebs, well, I already explained that. If you're a weeb, I guess you just gotta own it. I call my friend a weeb all the time because she calls me shit like "Senpai" while we're messaging and always says "Gomen" instead of sorry. Such a weeb. But hey, no hate.

It's okay. You shouldn't worry what other people think negatively. The people calling you names are lame and need to mind their own business. Sometimes, some people can be overly obsessive over you for petty reasons. Tell them to get a life or just learn how to ignore them and you should be alright mate.

Most of the people that I know aren't cool enough to even know what a weeb is.
