Clannad (inc. After Story)
Toradora (and the LNs are even better)
Steins; Gate
Kanon (2006)
FMA: Brotherhood
Bakemonogatari (inc. episodes 13-15)
Usagi Drop
Aishiteruze Baby
Myself; Yourself
ef: Tale of Memories (though I hated the second season)

I could list another ten that could make this list on a different day. Also, My Love Story will immediately jump pretty high on that list, if the final episode is as good as I hope.

Reverse list. Be prepared for a lot of mecha!

10. Gundam Seed/Destiny - I know, I know. Blasphemy, but this is THE show that got me BACK into anime after a long hiatus. While there was quite a bit of filler, repeated use of stock footage and a protagonist with a mesiah complex, I still enjoyed it. Multiple strong female characters. Simply awesome mecha designs. An awesome revolving supporting cast of villains and heroes. A story that at one point had me rooting for both sides (which happens a lot in Gundam). Plenty of eye opening WTF moments. Characters that made me love/hate them. Intrigue, espionage, etc. This is one of those shows that has a little bit to offer to really any anime fan Gundam or otherwise. While there are many more Gundam series that are admittedly better than this, I still find myself reminiscing about Seed/Destiny and building models based on the show.

9. Robotech/Macross - The grand daddy of them all for me. I saw this show before I ever even got to see Transformers, Voltron or Gundam. The fact that Macross is still going to this day in multiple forms really speaks to the overall sotries and designs that became Robotech here in America. Roy Focker, Rick Hunter and Lisa hays are still benchmark characters I measure a lot of other characters against. While the show hasn't aged as well as others over the years, I still get giddy when I fire it up in my dvd/bluray player from time to time.

8. Gundam Wing - What's that? a Gundam Anime show in prime time? I remember working at a comic book shop and people coming in to buy model kits from the show, picking up import copies on VHS (yes VHS) and people talking about it both good and bad that probably hadn't seen any other anime on TV other than maybe Sailor Moon or DBZ. While I didn't care too much for the thought of the Gundams being always ALL POWERFUL or them rebuilding them to beat whoever managed to beat them, the action was still awesome and the villains tried so so hard. As a Gundam model builder and huge Gundam fan. this show also provided my favorite Gundam design ever... granted it didn't come until the very end of the series (the movie), but I adore the Gundam Deathscythe Hell Custom. Yes I am biased here. The show was good. The action was great and the story was easy for newcomers to get into. It was like G Gundam for a slightly newer generation.

7. GATE: Thus the JSDF Fought There - yes it's a new show and just finished, but I instantly fell in love with it. So much so am waiting with baited anticipation to start collecting and reading the manga and LNs once they get translated for English/American audiences. It really does have everything in it. Multiple likable characters. Great art style. Vivid imagery. Authenticity. Politics. Religion. intrigue. Espionage. Action. Sex. Romance. you name it, this show has got it. This show has the potential to sky-rocket up my list depending on what direction it goes in in the future.

5. The Familiar of Zero - I know I know. This show can be sickeningly sweet and simple at times, but that's why I love it damnit. It reminded me a lot of a Harry Potter-esque realm with not quite as much plot or intrigue, but there was still enough there. I loved all the colors and brightness of the show. Tongue-in-cheek humor mostly dealing with boobs and ecchi situations. The tension of the constant "will they or won't they" get together and thinking to myself "just shut up and kiss already." The show reminded me of being a kid in love but not sure if it was right or not. The main male character, Saito, really reminds me a lot of myself in high school as well. That might sound odd or sad to some, but sometimes you just relate that way. There were so many underyling stories about faith, inner strength, the power of love, family dynamics and a tiny bit of politics and war as well. Some of the story lines did feel a bit rushed at times, but the overall humor and plain dumb fun of the show had me hooked until the very end. I wish there could be more stories about where Saito and Lousie went and did after the show ended. Sadly I doubt that will ever happen.

4. Gundam 00 - A Gundam story dealing with politics, fighting/peace in the middle east and well as a bit of Western Asia. A group of people who's strings are being pulled elsewhere calling themselves freedom fighters and fighters for peace, yet still using imposing and sometimes violent manners. A story partially about religious zealots and idolatry. Superb animation with not nearly as much re-used stock footage as many Gundam series. Great overall pacing and not too much in the way of filler or flashbacks that tend to haunt a lot of Gundam series. Just a great overall solid show, even if not as many of my favorite. Gundam/Mecha came from this show. The just overall quality of the show really shines.

3. Zeta Gundam - Almost as much as Robotech/Macross this show got me into Anime and mecha. This show still has some of my favorite Gundam designs and influences to this day. It was a sequel that still held on as its own thing. It stood on its own strengths and own two legs. I still have yet to see a series with more simple and clean designs to the mecha, yet still looking sharp and powerful. Characters in this show, much like MSG, are still brought up and talked about in other UC Timelines. Zig Zeon!

2. Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood - This show was just so so good. I love shows where the hero(s) aren't the all powerful end-all-be-all badasses. I like my heroes having to work for their success. It makes things even better in this series when the heroes are constantly damning themselves and trying to atone for their sins while simultaneously coming to an understanding about how the world tends to really work. Even after watching the original, once I got through the first 10 or so episodes, this show just really clicked for me. Many episodes left me with either a sense of heartache for what just happened, or a sense of relief for what the protagonists might have accomplished. When a show makes you feel things, you know there was something good there.

1. Code Geass - I don't know what else to say about this show other than how it truly sucked me in. It had a very distinct art style. The colors were the brightest of the brights and the darkest of the darks, as were the characters. You had a main protagonist that made you love, hate, fear and respect him all in the matter of a few episodes. Yet, you still cheered for him. The action was off the hook. The death scenes were almost always great. Plenty of action. So much twisting and turning in the plot. Martial arts, espionage, mecha fighting. The show truly had a little bit of everything. It even had enough sci-fi and creepiness to it to appeal to that part of my fandom. The show was just the total package for me.
