Humanity Has Declined is one of my all time favorites. I think it flew under most peoples radar because of it's deceptively cute art. But anyone who has seen it can tell you that it gets really dark and surreal.

Gatchaman Crowds is one of the greatest-anime-ever-made-that-isn't-Durarara.

Tonari no Seki-kun I COULDN'T STOP LAUGHING. I think it flew under the radar because of it's half-length episodes.

Rolling Girls was a real treat to watch, but it wasn't put on Crunchyroll (in my opinion, it should have been chosen for simulcast, but hey).

Nobunagun is clearly inspired by Kill La Kill, but is awesome in it's own right.

That's about it. I'll probably end up watching more obscure anime, so I might be back.

Already been mentioned in previous posts, but I really loved Cuticle Detective Inaba and Nobunagun. Cuticle Detective Inaba cracked me up, especially since comedy is probably my favourite genre. I feel like Nobunagun got really mixed reviews but I absolutely loved everything about it.

I also really loved [email protected], Orenchi no Furo Jijou and, not sure if the one is underrated or not, Hyouka.

^ i thought of samurai flamenco but honestly though i loved goto and the samurai guy the show was a little wacky for me

Mushishi
Mononoke
Natsume Yuujinchou
Gingitsune
Barakamon
Hoozuki no Reitetsu

most of these are fairly calm, slice-of-life anime which don't typically attract a bigger audience

Agree with so much with you saying Barakamon, Hoozuki no Reitetsu and Mononoke. They were so good but either hardly anyone watched them or there was no hype. Barakamon was so funny and really good but even goods wise, there is next to nothing. But it is right up there with one of my favourites!

Hoozuki was great too with a lot of dark humour and I really thought it would get a lot of hype but nothing. It's a shame because I don't think it would really get a second season because so many people didn't seem fussed by it. And I've literally never met anyone that's watched Mononoke. The art style alone is exceptional!

Invaders of the Rokujyoma is one for sure. I thought it was adorable and needed more.

My other personal one and just might be able to say it's my favorite and that I never see talked about much anymore is Strike the Blood. Not sure if it is considered an underdog or not, but in the world of anime these days I do not think it was quite that successful and I for one am really really hoping for more.

i dont think there is connections between the two, unless Ah! My Goddness! takes place in an VR-MMORPG game

No, but funnily enough, YGGDRASIL was a computer system in that show.
Also, what do you mean by underdog anime? Just one that isn't very well known?

yea, i wouldnt know what else to call it, so i just called it underdog. Like an anime that is underestimated but when you watch it its amazing..therefor nobody watches it and it doesnt have allot of popularity because they assume it will lack in content or be a copy of another famous anime.

I saw it just recently so I dunno how popular it was when it was airing, but I LOVE Samurai Flamenco. Like, top 3 anime of all time for me, and from what I've read online it seems to have gotten pretty mixed reviews. I know a lot of people were unhappy with the twists, but personally I loved the ride. I loved the characters. I loved the wackiness. It was insane. It's the series that I'll always carry a torch for.

Hero will never give up, never hide, never be defeated, never accept evil! ~ \(>o<\)

im actually have that on my queue i watched the first 4 episodes and i do like it

Ygggdrasil is indeed from Norse mythology. I've seen it used in quite a few places, so it's one of those "popular obscure" (if such a contradiction could be used) terms.

As for underdog, there is only one.

Well, in that case, I guess I have a few. For starters, I'll probably get some hate for this, but... Spider Riders, anyone?

Kids on the Slope is another one I would mention. It's a music anime set in 1960s Japan, focused around 3 high schoolers. It's really good, especially if you're a jazz fan. The characters were great to watch, and although the story isn't some kind of grand adventure, I like it very much.

The last one I'll mention is Gargantia on the Verdurous Planet. TBH, I don't know if this is an 'underdog' or not, but I don't hear it talked about very much, so I kind of assume it's not very popular. Anyway, I love this show. The brilliant colors and fantastic English dub (I know, I know, sub over dub, but you really need to check this one out- it's actually better than the Japanese, I think), along with their use of language/culture barrier really made it for me.
