Having rewatched Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust today, I'm feeling a bit nostalgic. I fawn over those old, beautiful, hand-drawn frames and action styles. Bloodlust is a bit more recent, but it's no surprise that Kawajiri has worked on projects such as Ninja Scroll, X, Metropolis, Neo Tokyo, Biohunter, Petshop of Horrors, and Memories. I'm looking for series', movies, and ovas of the same ilk. They don't necessarily have to be older, but understand when I say something akin to stunning classics like GitS, Akira, and Jin-Roh. Things produced by companies like Madhouse and Manga Entertainment.

I've been thinking about Wicked City, Demon City Shinjuku, and Cyber City Oedo 808, but the problem is that a lot of these earlier movies / ovas get mid-ground to negative reviews, so it's hard to discern what's worth watching. I could go down my entire list of potentials, but that would take ages.

I appreciate any help in advance.

The first Patlabor movie is one of my favourites of the era. The OVA and TV series it is based off are action comedies, but the movie drops the comedy in favour of an action thriller. The series are good but to me they are outshone by the quality of their own sequel. There was a second Patlabor movie but they changed most of the characters and I couldn't get into it at all. I don't know what the quality of the dubs are like as I have only ever watched them in Japanese with subtitles.

Do you mean Rumiko Takahashi's Mermaid Saga ? If you do I'll second that as all Rumiko's work is amazing .

I'd also like to suggest Psychic Detective Yakumo, Detective School Q, Ghost Hunt, Cats Eye, Tokko, Ryoko's Case Files, Goku (aka Midnight Eye) and Box of Goblins. They're all either mystery, horror or mystery/horror and all in the style you mention.

Also, Wicked City and Demon City Shinjuku are 2 of my favorite classic titles (feels weird saying that since I bought them when they were new).

Ohh, you guys are spoiling me with suggestions. I'll add all of this to my watch list. I was looking at Goku, but it's another one of those things I think people rate poorly simply because it's older.

Oh, I agree. There are too many older titles that get passed over for just that reason. Some others that I absolutely loved (that just came to mind) were Someday's Dreamers 1 and 2 (fantasy/drama/tragedy), Blue Drop (sci-fi/slice of life/drama/yuri), City Hunter/Angel Heart (Action/P.I.), Guyver (Sci-fi) and Borgman (Sci-fi).
