Lately I've been really fascinated with Rotary engines and I've had my eye on the Mazda RX-7 FC model. I've been saving up for one (currently $0 in to it though lol) so I can tune it up and whip the hell out of it. For some reason I'm more interested in little cars that i can toss around as opposed to the latest and greatest car that's really good at going in a straight line

I daily drive an 88 rx7.

People talk about horror stories with rotary engines, but it's only because people are idiots. Do not drive a rotary engine unless you've let it warm up for 5 minutes. Every 3-5 fill ups at the gas station check your oil, fill it up if needed. Oil changes at 3000 is vital, pushing them further back really ruins the rotaries because of their thirst for oil.

My 7 has 88k miles on it and i'm sure it's going to last me well into 200k's.

Well I do have question. I don't really know much about cars lol but what's the cheapest 'good' car I can buy. Brand new vs secondhand price? Not looking for anything extravagant considering I'm freshman college and looking for a job lol
By good I mean, not needing maintenance as much as possible and not gas-gluttonous cars lol.

You didn't say how much you want to spend.

Interior lighting? Can you be more specific, like you want led bulbs, or you want them to add more lights inside the interior (foot well, doors etc..) Parking Sensors are something that I would want straight from the factory, anything that is aftermarket tends to look cheap. Fog lights can be installed relatively easy (you could probably install them yourself even with no mechanical knowledge.)

In my experience, I would never buy from a stealership again. But I can give you some tips.

As far as a price is concerned I can explain how to get the price lower without them realizing it. You go in and talk about the car, act like you know nothing, bother them with tons of questions and then start SLOWLY adding extra add-ons to the car. Moonroof, fog lights, sound system, etc, do it all, everything floor mats, whatever. Lets say your spending goal is $20,000. The car normally is $25,000. With the addons the car is $30,000. You talk them down as LOW as you can go at the $30,000 price. Once you've gotten them to the lowest possible (lets say $22,000) you take off ALL the accessories you added and you've just talked them down to $17,000 after removing all of the extra parts. (tbh, i wouldnt go back to that dealership ever again, find a better dealership online. If you're primarily looking for a brand new mazda, look on the forums for reviews. Almost EVERY car forum has a thread for reviews on all of the dealerships around you.)

I got an 04 impala, bought it last year from a buddie who fixes and re-sells. I drive it gently because I don't want to go car shopping atleast until oh say 2024? That'd be so nice

I also got a 1970 Nova last year that I bought as a long term investment. I'll re-sell that someday maybe and the knowledge, I wanted to learn about the car on my own. It feels a lot different than driving now days cars, funfun. Drum brakes, no power steering, huge front end.

This thread makes me sad every time I see it bumped .
Some one ran me off the road on the 4th of July and my baby is currently down.
I'm fixing it myself but it's taking longer than expected ($$$) lol, suspension is done and I did finally get her running today so just the cosmetics left. Not gonna lie this did give an excuse to buy the front bumper I wanted to buy earlier but couldn't justify the purchase at the time. Plus it's a shame that I only enjoyed my new rims and tires for like a week but such is life.........

Almost done but back to stock rims and old tires

I need more blinker fluid. Anyplace that I can get it for cheap?

Had a guy apply to work in finance at my dealership, said he had been in the business 9 years. We took a look at his car while he was waiting for the interview and told him it looked like he was low on blinker fluid. The idiot actually went to our parts department and asked for it. Sad thing is... he really had been in the business 9 years, and is just that stupid.

That's awesome!

Personally I'd never buy new car, always seemed like a bit of a waste. I drive a 1992 Subaru alcyone / svx lsi AWD. In perfect condition, no rust, original paint, mint suede / leather interior, with no holes or cracking. The engine is over bored and puts out 260 on the dyno. tops out around 170 mph, with a sub 6 second 0-60. It has xenon headlights, and led's for all of the interior lights. It came with rims and a transmission off of a 06 wrx. best of all the previous owner, installed a car computer, with a built in 7 inch touch screen, gps, Bluetooth calling, satellite radio, ipod jack and a backup camera.

so basically it has every feature you'd find in a 40k + new car and I paid 4000. I've had it for two years, taken it from NY to CA and back and put 20000 miles on it, and i've had no problems.

Sounds like you found yourself a gem, not everyone is so lucky. Anytime you go pre-owned you run the risk of picking up what a more-than-likely-moron previous owner left behind. At least with a new car comes the piece of mind of being the first person to take it home, plus we are so matierialistic we love new shiny things that make us look better than others.

I've been burned on my last Jeep. It was an 02 Jeep Grand Cherokee. Within 3000 miles, it will burn up 5 quarts of oil. I always had to add more in. It was an Arizona car, and I think it must have overheated, and burned up the piston rings, and that's why it was going through so much oil. Got rid of it, and now my 2008 Jeep Grand Cherokee, has been running great, since I bought it three years ago.

Hello, Great Thread! I was wondering if there are any opinions on a ford escape 2006, i´ve bought it from new and haven´t had any problems since, i´ve replaced the timing belt gasket, and had a regular maintenance schedule (currently 75Kmiles).

I´ve read this car is somewhat of a lemon, is that so?

thanks!

The '06 escapes were pretty hit or miss. Either you got one that you loved, or you got one that broke down all the time and was a pain to own. Sounds like yours is leaning more towards the former. I would say as long as you keep up regular maintenance it should be just fine. If you do think about trading it in, definitely do so before 100k miles, that is the last major depreciation spike you have ahead of you so if you trade it in after that mark you would be robbing yourself of some value.

If just looking for basic transportation look for these:

I have an 08 Saturn Astra with 130K on it with very little maintence done on it (plus despite being rare in the states maintence is not expensive). Its the cheapest European car you could buy (made in Germany and Belgium). You can find used ones for 4-6K range.

Also the 2nd Generation Ford Focus (2006-11) has very good reliability for the price and you could probably find one in the 4-7K range.

If you need to go cheaper than that the 1997-01 Ford Escort/Mercury Tracer. Mazda designed it. They are pretty quick for the segment, have great visibility, and you can get close to 38mpg highway. Plus extremely reliable and cheap to repair.

Awesome, thanks! I can't seem to find the 08 Saturn Astra in my area though so I guess I'll check the 2nd one out! That 4-7k range is a used one, right? If that is so, what do you think is a good mileage? O:

I have an acura cl-s '03, last model year they made it. I can only drive auto, so it's an auto, but apparently the manual was quite the car. obviously i can't drive stick. auto drives pretty well though considering, i've never put it to the test as far as speed goes, never exceeded 80 or so...

I mean, it's not a convertible, but it's thoroughly pretty and i enjoy driving it, it has a nice acceleration rate and despite its age looks and runs pretty well.

some guy I have class with asked me if I was selling my rims. Originally i thought he meant my tires. I told him they weren't for sale lol. a couple of the guys i go to school with who have nicer cars than i do find mine to be quite appealing, one of 'em has a drool worthy BMW, jade green colored convertible, the other has an audi, both of which I think are nicer than my car, but i digress. My car is mahhh babyyy.

my sister has an accord from '97 which is a pretty desirable car for drifting, she's gotten a bunch of people sticking notes to her window asking what the price is because she always parks it out front, it's funny.

Astras are hard to find, you probably have to go search on cars.com or something. They only sold around 5K of them and that was for only 1 year (then Saturn went bust). I would say good mileage is around 90K for around 6K. If one has over 110K that's OK too as long as the car didn't come from a mountianous region (hilly terrain kills cars). MPG is 25 city 30 hwy which is what I get.

Well, on my way home from work tonight. I hit a deer while on the highway. I'm pretty bummed about it too, since I really like this Jeep.
