Im looking at getting the new persona and disgaea on the PS4 when theyre released.
Do you think i need to know any of the back story in the other games?

Each Persona game is standalone. There might be thematic connections, maybe character/location cameos, and definitely demons from SMT appearing but it is probably not going to be a direct sequel to any other game in the franchise.

Persona is standalone, and as far as I know, Disgaea doesn't require prior knowledge of previous entries as well. The thematic connections and the cameos from the older Personas are the only things you wouldn't quite comprehend if you jump into Persona.

It really helps with Person Q if you played 3 and 4 since it has the cast of both games as your playable characters.

Disgaea often has little references to previous titles, and in jokes but they're standalone.
Persona 5 may hint that it ties in with 3/4/4a/4au/Q but it will be entirely standalone

Both of those games are standalone.

Though from a story standpoint in the Disgaea series, nothing really touches Disgaea 1.

All Persona games are in story are all equally out there. (Hitler is in Person 2 and you play Blue Jesus in Persona 3 and Scoobydoo Mysteries in 4)

You'll kind of get an idea of what to expect if you've played previous titles in the series, but otherwise they are standalone games with individual plots.

Prior knowledge not required on any of these games. Can even play them in different order and still make coherent sense.

I know this is kinda old, but yeah they are all stand alone games, it would be best if you played the older disgea games because the newer one is one of the best ones, so you most likely wouldn't go back and play the older ones. The persona games are really great as well if you can't there is an anime on the fourth one and I think manga on persona Q which is canon. If you have time play 3 then Q then 4 then 5 if you have time. just to get a fell of the games and stories are amazing.
