To be better human beings.

To make a living. So that you can pay all the bills you slowly stack on throughout the years. To buy food and such. Have a place to live. Then of course if after that you have money left. To enjoy your wants.

Simple to be able to buy the things I like or to help out my family when some of them might need help. Of course as others have said money to buy food, pay bills, and to save. Remember 20/50 bucks a paycheck may not seem like much but it builds up over time. ^_^

Work is over-rated.

I'm going to watch another Grateful Dead show.

It seems people can't see or don't want to answer the depth of this question... I don't blame them. It's sure to start up some annoying argument so I will just say "hur dur money" and leave at that.

The prehistoric tradition of the few exploiting the many, which for convenience I'll relate to slavery, the feudal system, and abuses of the industrial revolution (we only have weekends because of unionized labor pushing back against employers), combined with America's largely Protestant English roots of "We're the minority but we're the best and we have (had actually) an empire" plus the long Cold War mentality that we have to strive constantly or be annihilated.

That adds up to long hours of work for most people while still the elite make all the money. Religion of "Don't worry about your physical life of suffering, God will take care of everything later on," also plays a role since prehistory, still strong in America.

Why do we work so much? Because we are convinced we need to buy piles of crap and pay for luxuries like internet and crunchyroll subscriptions, pre pay for blue ray limited edition boxxsd sets of sword art online, figmas and prepaid limited edition figmas only available via crunchyroll ectera, etcetera at nausium. If you need all that shit then you have to get off your dead a** and earn the money to pay for it. In reality you don't have to work. You can go into the bush and be truley self sufficiant like our ancistors did if you find civiliation too taxing ;-)

Because bills do not pay themselves, and because keeping the bills paid in full and on time means being able to budget for other things (necessities first, fun stuff after).

Your right, the question wasn't "why do we work"? it was "why do we work so much"?
There is a difference.
Its part of life but its true, we work too much. I dont just mean the whole five days a week thing , its also for how long we work.
Basically go to school, work, retire when you're really really old, die.
As someone else said "how else would society function"? well this is true but its still a harsh and kind of unfair relaity.
We are all slaves. Believe it. Yes we get paid, but we aren't really all that free. We still have masters.
We like worker ants.
But hey, some people are lucky enough to have jobs that they actually like doing.
I used to like working alot more when i didn't have to get up so friccing early. I used to earn better money also.
But i guess you gotta do what you gotta do..
EDIT: its true what others said also, some of us work extra than we need buy choice, not because they necessarily need to, but often for social stature or for meaterial things/possesions.
The cost of living dose seem to be going up though! owning a house seems almost un achievable.
And soem people have too many kids.

I could make far more than I currently do if I were willing to write code as a contract employee.

I enjoy my 9-5 work week and full benefits. Most of the contract workers I know work 60-70 hours a week for fixed pay and no benefits.
