We work to be slaves of Capitalism. Most of us seem to be brainwashed by the idea that the harder you work, the better your life will be. There's also the idea of the rich deserving to own such amounts of money, which I disagree with. I know, no system is without flaws, but why support a system whose decadency is reaching its peak?

Max Weber would be proud of you.

To sustain a certain standard of living, and some people might enjoy their work. Or bringing in money from their business makes them happy.

I happen to really enjoy my job. I have responsibilities as any other process engineer does, but for the most part my day (and any overtime I want) is spent solving the problems I find important or necessary. I believe being self directed with the trust of a company behind you goes a long way towards leading work away from the realm of "the necessary evil." I can make my own hours, work from anywhere in the world (which also means I can take plenty of vacations if I don't mind working during them) and the money isn't anything to complain about. There is a job for everyone, unfortunately with the wealth disparity, not many people can afford to go searching. I just happened to get very lucky.

Because we live to work instead of work to live.

Why would people want to work so much? Unless it is for your own business then fair enough but I would much rather have time to myself. At the end of the day, you only live once

I work "so much" because I enjoy my job.

10.5% of the workforce is unemployed.. I would argue they don't work enough. (googled "real unemployment" - take economics if you don't know what real unemployment is)
35.4% of the US draws on welfare benefits. Again, I argue not working enough. (googled as well - and would probably overlap unemployment)
70% of new graduates have $30K of student loan debt. (Avg household has over $7K in credit card debt)

Of people working, I say the ones working are doing it to maintain what they deem a quality life.

Of white colored employees, a lot work long hours for advancement. Most jobs in the US promote based on performance more seniority. This promotes work environments of competition. (Which I prefer).

Pretty much.

If I had enough to enjoy my small wants, I'd work less.
