This is sad.

What I find even more saddening is my desire to see if I'm on the app... or if you have to make a profile first.

I read this article this morning about the Peeple App: http://www.inquisitr.com/2461580/peeple-developers-get-a-lesson-in-harassment-on-twitter/

This is definitely something worth knowing about, and discussing. As I was reading it, I got a little scared that maybe I was on the app too but they say they send text messages to people and I haven't received any. That small fear alone made me realize that although this app was made with good intentions, it really does cross a line by letting users make profiles for non-users.

What do you think? Do you think this app crosses ethical lines? How would you change the app, if you could (or would you say to just scrap the whole thing)?

Update: Here are some more perspectives on the app.

Except that 'rate my professor/doctor/whatever' is all about rating a person's profession or job. This is rating people on a personal level. If I had an account I am more than sure I would get criticism from my parents like: "Doesn't call home often enough." or "When are you going to have babies already?".

They need your mobile number to add you (in theory), so you would receive a text message if someone had made a profile for you. I think if you got a message that you'd need the app to actually check it though.... which is pretty awful.

Apparently, the app's creators are also huge hypocrites.
The irony is delicious (and pathetic).
What's that, Julia? You don't like people judging you and talking bad about your work? Well, imagine that.

I hate this with a damn passion, who the hell decided that allowing people to make an account for someone else was a good idea. But you don't need the other persons consent, all you need is their phone number, but in reality you don't even need their real phone number, because the phone number is only needed to notify them, not to ask them if they will allow them to make the account.

But not only that but you can't get a negative comment removed you can only ask the person who posted it to remove it. So they can say anything they want and you can't have it removed, and the biggest issue with this is that employers now look at peoples Facebook profiles and other social media before they hire them. So if you have someone spreading lies about you there is no way for you to stop people from spreading lies, and those lies will end up screwing you over.

What a great application, wonderful, the wonderful irony is that they turned their twitter account to private, because people don't like the idea of spreading lies about other people, without a way for it to be removed.

Why does this even exist?

You need to know the phone number to make a rating right? There shouldn't be a problem unless you want to abuse someone without repercussions.

    Is this a real thing?

It's unquestionable that it's unethical. Thank god I barely give out my number.

I don't see how this is different from facebook or any other social media apps.

If people don't want to get cyber bullied... it's simple... just log off o__o.

I feel worse about like people who are like shy or loners in school, and then the popular kids or the assholes decide to put a profile up for them on the app and are like: "THIS KID HAS NO FRIENDS IS THE BIGGEST LOSER" And then others jump in with: "HAHA I KNOW RIGHT _____"

That for me would be like so painful.

Still, we should have an app like this for CR :D. TOTALLY wanna leave reviews for a few peeps XD.
