I saw this linked to on reddit today.
http://kfor.com/2015/10/01/woman-says-she-is-happier-than-ever-after-fulfilling-lifelong-wish-of-becoming-blind/

Jewel Shuping was diagnosed with Body Integrity Identity Disorder, she self-identifies as blind so she had a doctor blind her.

At the end of the article is this jewel:

“When there’s nobody around you who feels the same way, you start to think that you’re crazy. But I don’t think I’m crazy, I just have a disorder.”

That's what having a mental disorder means! It literally means her thinking is disordered.

Eh, her body, if that's what makes her happy she should be allowed to do it.
Hopefully she doesn't regret it.

Umm, no. Self harming yourself of any kind should not be allowed.

Sure, not on a spur of the moment. But if it's something you've wanted to do for years, thought about it long and hard, what real right does anyone have to stop anyone from harming themselves. Other than to try to be a "good person" and be "ethical and moral"

There are people who truly want to kill themselves. They have thought about it for years. Why is it wrong for them to do so? Is it because it is not normal to want death? Like, is it some kind of mental disorder? Would me wanting to make myself blind be considered a mental disorder?

Death is a weird one for me, 'cause it's the be all end all, but I'm all about euthanasia.
And I mean sure, if you know you'd be much happier if you were blind, regardless of it being because of some sort of disorder you should be allowed to. People have sex changes which is pretty much just self mutilation, and that's gender identity disorder.

That reminds me of something I saw on tv where a woman wanted to be paralyzed. As far as I know she never found a doctor willing to do it.

I believe it's called mental instability. She should have been counseled not encouraged to mutilate herself! What about this makes sense!?

I don't believe in psychology
But of course she should have been talked to thoroughly before hand.

It's part of a rather disturbing thing that seems is starting to trend. Also I'm not completely sure how to put this into words so bear with me if this comes out wrong

Basically with all these Gey right movements and such and people demanding to be accepted you have some people who want to be accepted for anything and everything. And when I say accepted I don't mean not making fun of them or not mistreating them. I mean they want everyone including themselves to think they are 100% normal and there is NOTHING at all wrong with them.

I call this disturbing because we have situations like this where people ignore their own problems or even make them worse because instead of trying to deal with them or get better in some way they either do nothing or they make it worse because it's "who they are".

But that isn't how you deal with mental disorders, you don't pretend you don't have a problem you accept the fact there is something wrong with you but then you work through it. If it's psychological you get help and if it's physical then you learn to compensate. Remember a mental disorder doesn't define who you are it's just a small part of how your head works. But who you are as a person is so much more complicated than that. Also just because it's a part of you doesn't mean you shouldn't change it and try to improve yourself.

Your prerogative. More importantly, this woman clearly has a mental disorder. She inflicted permanent self-harm to herself to spend the rest of her life disabled. She's troubled and needed assistance.
