Yes. I'm pretty handy with knives and most bladed tools in general. I have a lot of kitchen experience and find cutting things to be relaxing and fun.

I keep my knives very sharp and immensely enjoy the act of cutting with a knife that is beyond razor-sharp. I know pumpkins are supposed to be carved with dedicated pumpkin knives, but I use my high carbon knives and they work fine.

Yup, I always would go to the church's pumpkin patch to pick a couple up with my family and friends then go back home and we'd compete to see who could carve the best one. I always carved a face, but one of my friends would carve an entire picture, it was pretty cool. Too bad those days have come and gone.

It was a long time ago (25+ years) the last time I did that. Each floor of the dorm got a pumpkin to carve, and the RA left it in the bathroom with a sign inviting anyone to carve it. One evening, I got an idea, and my roommate and I made it into a "beholder" (a Dungeon's and Dragon's monster) using just stuff lying around in our room. We carved one big eye, used a stale donut to make the iris and pupil, shaving cream to fill the area around the donut to make the sclerae (white part of the eye), and embedded some red thread in the shaving cream for blood vessels.. Clothes hanger wire wrapped in toilet paper colored with a red marker for the eyestalks, and marshmallows for the 10 small eyes. Interconnecting cracks carved into the pumpkin skin were filled with ramen noodles dyed red with the marker (cracked marker open into water, soaked the noodles). Large wide open mouth carved with many irregular small teeth. Finally, a small reading light inside with the cord running out the back to make it glow-- you could see the light shining out the eye, mouth, and all the small ramen noodle-filled "veins" on the surface. It was a neat effect for something cobbled together over a few hours in the evening. We won "Scariest Pumpkin" in the dorm contest, but subsequently the dorm council reneged on awarding any actual promised prizes! Oh well-- it was still fun. I wish I could find the photo we took (well before digital cameras).

We roast them in the oven with a little bit of salt. Maybe this year I'll actually endeavor to do something with the pumpkin flesh, like pie. idk

carving is a work of art,
but a face, needs a smile.
