I believe that a serious anime fan is someone who has watched a good amount of anime (enough to know the tropes at least). Someone who can point out some distinct characters, and has finished at least a couple of series. At the very least someone who can talk extensively about anime and provide a candid opinion.

probably knowledge of the most obscure things about a lot of anime.

I mean, I like Kamen Rider but I couldn't tell you Shotaro Ishinomori's shoe size or how long his afro was or the fifth sentence spoken in Kamen Rider Agito in episode 20 or anything like that.

After 7,809 total episodes, I still treats each anime as a new experience, never comparing it to what I watched before.

A "serious" anime fan will have at least three (3) of the following in clinically significant measure:

1. The patient exhibits an attachment indicating they have become sufficiently engaged with and been interested enough by any anime character to consider them a favourite. This symptom is to count for double if the patient has adopted this or any other character as a spouse and refers to them as either a "husbando" or "waifu".

2. The patient has accumulated a substantial amount of merchandise relevant to a specific series that cannot be attributed to obsessive compulsive disorder and in a way that is significantly detrimental to their quality of life, typically in the form of having neither sufficient money nor living space.

3. The patient insists that Japanese vocal casts are inherently superior to vocal casts in their native language, and responds to contrary statements of opinion with extreme aggression and possible violence.

4. The patient has routinely engaged in any of the following behaviours over the course of the last six (6) months:

i. Attending an anime convention
ii. Joining/attending an anime club
iii. Staying abreast of news related to anime
iv. Watching anime

5. The patient expresses an irrational paranoia that the Japanese animation industry is in perpetual jeopardy of annihilation. Overreactions to even slight declines in market performance or closures of production firms or distributors are to be expected to induce any of the following:

i. Wailing and gnashing of teeth
ii. Pointing out how much anime and anime-related merchandise they personally buy
iii. Extended speeches about the evils of digital piracy and insistence that everyone and their uncle, brother, and sister buy BluRay discs
iv. Explosive diarrhea

6. The patient exhibits an irrational disdain for anyone expressing enjoyment of any of the following series or genres:

i. One Piece
ii. Naruto
iii. Bleach
iv. Sailor Moon
v. Pokemon
vi. Yu-Gi-Oh!
vii. Harem anime
viii. Ecchi anime
ix. Moe anime

7. The patient sincerely enjoys any of the listed series or genres in 6.

8. The patient has ever:

i. Made an anime music video
ii. Made a video discussing their opinion of anything related to anime
iii. Posted their opinion about anything related to anime in a discussion board
iv. Talked to another person about anything related to anime

9. The patient knows what "the dark side" is and has used it to watch anime. Patients exhibiting symptom (5) tend to also exhibit this symptom, particularly if they also exhibit 5 - iii.

Just watch more anime in moderate doses and be sure to enjoy the occasional reference to Nico Yazawa. You should be just fine.
