Just bought Chrono trigger for my 3ds. What with Chrono Trigger being just a ds game is it still compatible with my 3ds? Also, I know i'm over a decade late for this one, but is it as good as people say it is?

I can't say whether it is compatible.

As for whether it is as good as it's reputation; that largely depends on where you are coming from.

It revolutionized JRPGs in several ways. It has a much better storyline than most JRPGs that came before it, it's combat system feels more interactive and less reliant on menus than most JRPGs that came before, and it has a great variety of characters and settings. Many of the mechanics and plot devices used in Chrono Trigger are still being used today by other JRPGs; in that sense, it has held up very well.

That being said, it's a very different game than most American RPGs that have been produced since then. It's definitely a very different type of game than, any of the Bioware, Bethesda, or Obsidian RPGs, so if you go in expecting Fallout, Skyrim, or Dragon Age, you'll be puzzled and probably disappointed.

Woldlnn You are in for a real treat. While I never played the ds version. I had it on SNES and it blew my mind. I beat it like 20 times. It is safe to say its even better then anything you have probably heard. Easily one of the best rpgs out even today. And yes ds games should work on your 3ds. Atleast thats how there systems usually works.

DS games are compatible with the 3DS. They obviously can't use the 3D feature, but they play perfectly fine.

DS games are in fact compatible with 3DS hardware, but no additional features are involved. Chrono Trigger is honestly one of my favorite classic JRPGs and it really epitomizes what makes RPGs and large scale adventures fun. The enjoyment of exploring, discovering, and battling are things that very little games are able to provide in modern games because they're too busy buttering up their games with features from other games instead of making sure the core gameplay is as fun as possible. Want a fun survival horror game? Sorry, we're going to throw useless RPG and parkour features into the game instead of actually perfecting the base game. Chrono Trigger never forgets it's an adventure and because of that it's always keeping on your toes with new and enjoying pieces of quest and adventure. From cute anime girls to robots belting Rick Astley's "Never Gonna Give you Up", Chrono Trigger is an amazing game- I hope you enjoy it.

I liked the story, character design, soundtrack and gameplay much better in Chrono Cross. In fact the entire time I played CT wished I was playing CC instead.

That being said I might have felt different if I played CT back in 1994 instead of playing CT 5 years after I played Chrono Cross.

I'm... not sure. I played it on the SNES, and I played the stuffing out of it. I've also played it in various versions and as various ports throughout the years. There's no question it was amazing for it's time and I do still think it holds up very well even today. That said, it's still a SNES game and it has some rough edges that I'm certain I'm easily able to overlook simply because that's the way the game has always been for me. If you're coming into the game just now and comparing it to more recent games though? I can't really say.

While it's absolutely an amazing game, one that got me into JRPGs it's still ultimately up to him as to the OP to decide if it's amazing for himself. I mean, if you were playing this game back in the SNES days no doubt this is the best thing you could've played, it was coming out near the end of the SNES era, at that time having graphics like that was incredible. Top it all off with the innovation in battle system design there's really nothing one can pit against it in terms of "one of the best games of its time."

It's still undoubtedly a classic, but if you've already played the other, more modern gems of JRPGs then you might not think it's as amazing as people tell you. Most of those people likely played it on the SNES era and for them it was just mind-boggling. For you, who will now play this on the 3DS and in 2015 where I'm sure you've played plenty of good games, unless you think back and appreciate the historical context of the game, you'll probably pass it off as a "good" game but nothing amazing.

Has "Chrono Cross" even been made outside of the PS1? CT by the way is considered one of the best old school JRPGs, some fans even say its the best JRPG of all time. I have fond memories of playing this on the SNES, along with "Final Fantasy VI" (which was released as III in NA because Square Soft never FF II, FF III, and FF V until years later, thanks to the success of FF VII).

I'm pretty sure CC is available on the PS store or was at least at one point but other than that I haven't seen any remakes of it

Well! I have to say that so far I am enjoying the absolute hell out of this game! I really do think this holds up well, even today. It's definitely not all about graphics and vastness of maps for me (seeing as I don't have a lot of time to game anymore). Thank you all for your replies, I am going to have to somehow get my hands on CC after completing this and i'm pretty sure I will be going through it all over again many times after the first.
