I'm not really sure what you're trying to accomplish with this thread. Yes, I'm sure there are people who make that assumption. The world is, unfortunately, full of stupid, awful people who make assumptions about people they don't understand. What they think shouldn't make any difference to what you watch.

I'm a woman and I watch all kinds of anime. I started out getting into shonen and I still love that. But I've also broadened my horizons over the years to enjoy many different genres. I like romance, I like drama, I like slice-of-life, I like action, I like fantasy, I like mystery. Most of the time it doesn't make any difference to me if there are any hot guys in the show. Though if there are hot guys I certainly appreciate them. Ok, yes, if you add hot guys into an already good show (Akatsuki no Yona, for instance) that might make it even better. I'm only human. I like a good looking face as much as the next person. And I also enjoy attractive voices (Mamoru Miyano, Daisuke Ono, etc.). But if that's all an anime has to offer, it isn't enough for me personally.

That said, I don't see anything wrong with people primarily enjoying an anime for the eye candy if that's what they like.

Do I think that some people assume that all girls only watch shounen for the cute guys? Probably. That isn't a really useful question, though. Some people will believe a lot of things that are obviously untrue. It's a form of prejudice, and while prejudice is based off of making assumptions, that doesn't mean people don't feel that way. I'm not saying it's right for them to do so, just that if the question is if people do that, there probably are people who do.

That said, I'm sure there are some women that really do watch the shows primarily for that reason, if not exclusively for that reason. And I don't really think that's a "wrong" way for them to enjoy their media. I mean, it's their life, and it isn't hurting anyone, so it doesn't really affect me.

Sounds fair. As long as there was no babymaking going on.

Are there other reasons besides those two to watch shounen?

I am very female biased. I do not watch for yaoi pairings, but that being said what two ADULTS do in private is not my concern as long as it is consensual. Equally frankly I'd prefer that sex be limited in anime. I'd prefer a good rom-comedy like Ai Yori Aoshi to a hard core anime like Yosuga no Sora.

No. Sports anime actually have really heartwarming moments and additional comedy to back them up, I enjoyed Free! , KnB, HQ!!, not just for the lookers but the fact that they were also good anime. Some guys can't get into male dominated sports anime because of the lack of female cast members but I thought all three of those were good.

And then there's darker anime like DRRR that could be qualified under the shonen umbrella that has hot guys but also what I consider to be a good plot, good action, and good drama.

Personally I don't identify at all with the majority of most fujoshi and I don't ship every male character with every other male character they touch, I don't understand their rationale at all, in my opinion, it ruins the show to go around shipping ten thousand pairings for me, I prefer to ship a few per show at a time. I don't know. If I want yaoi, I'll read yaoi manga instead.

People make all kinds of assumptions, occasionally they are correct.

Personally, I only watched Shimoneta, To Love-Ru, and Monster Musume for the comedy last season.

I thought Actually, I Am was funnier than all three of those shows, and had a more serious romance.

Meh if they want to ship gay pairings, let them ship gay pairings.

Shonen shows in essence are supposed to be about character growth and adventure, with action elements to sell toys.

I agree with you except I thought To Love RU: Darkness was disappointing since the two main female characters roles were vastly reduced. I am hoping the special finale does wind things up with a bang instead of a whimper.

What's this thread about? I only read the "yaoi pairings and good-looking guys" part of the title.
