Pro athletes get paid extremely high. We all know this.

Word is going around that college athletes should now be payed...?

What do you think of the pay-rate that these guys get? What do you think of the college kids getting paid?

Personally: No and no. I want to get paid and set for life for throwing a football or passing a puck too.

Sounds like you're just jelly. You could get paid for throwing a football or passing a puck... if you're better than 98% of everyone else who tries to do the same.

Yes and Yes

First of all, they are worth what people will pay for their entertainment. Similar to actors, are they worth the money for playing pretend? They are if the public pays to watch them. Secondly, elite athletes make up such a small percentage of the population that other folks cannot match their abilities to be successful. A lot of people could make really good doctors, lawyers, etc... But to be a professional athlete, there are physical limitations that immediately eliminate a huge portion of the population. Making them a rare commodity.

I don't see why not. They're like entertainers. You have to choose to spend money on them in order for you to contribute to their wealth. If you never go to their events, it hardly matters whether they are rich or poor. Your money isn't in their pocket. Stop supporting them if you don't want them to be so rich.

Sure. Let's start by seeing exactly how well you throw a football or pass a puck

If you think being a pro athlete means just throwing a ball, you need to educate yourself.

Someone may have talent in something, but being pro means every day training, harsh routine, self discipline etc.

Of course I think the pay is a bit much nowadays, but without these incentives, people won't push beyond their capabilities. It's these incentives that make people go beyond their own natural abilities and provide entertainment for the crowd.

Money makes people do things that are innovative or beyond limitations.

As you can see, i'm very anti-socialism.

Is a seat in a stadium worth $100?

No.

Even if the athlete is a total genius at what he does, he shouldn't be paid more than 10 times of what an engineer or a doctor makes.

What people fail to realize when it comes to the incredibly high salaries athletes get is that its the very best of the professional athletes that get paid incredibly high amounts. They get paid that much because they are the best of the best. An average professional player isn't going to make 1/10th of what the top paid athlete receives.

You must also account for how long their career in professional sports lasts. They don't get that salary for as long as an engineer is going to receive theirs.

Do they deserve it? Of course they do. Regardless if being an athlete is not as noble a profession as something in the math or sciences. Who can really argue that those athletes in the top income brackets didn't put monumental effort in order to be there. You don't get to be the best for lack of effort. They also work tirelessly to be the best at great expense to their health. Being a professional athlete is incredibly strenuous on the body.

I don't disagree that there are many who deserve more pay for the work they put in, but just because professional athletes get paid incredibly large amounts didn't mean they didn't work to achieve that. The world is full of the under appreciated.

Quit being jelly. You're not satisfied with your current condition and how much you make? Work harder.

Yes, they should.
The reason is as simple as they generate much more then they get paid.
That's why their employers and sponsors can afford to have them around and are willing to make them play a few times per year and train the rest of the time.
If you don't like it, don't buy into it and everyone else that thinks the same will effect how much they can be paid and therefore how much they do get.

They can get paid that much due to the amount of money that the teams get from sponsors and fans and oil.

When wages are a vital point in whether a team gets to keep a player or not, of course player wages will rise.

Wages are extremely important, but if you forget to give your star player a birthday card and cake on his birthday then you're just as screwed.

There is an incredibly lucrative industry based around people watching you sacrifice your body. I think it's justified. College kids should get full-rides and a per diem which already happens. I don't think they need to get a salary though.

Most athletes put their bodies on the line when they play. So they're paid to compensate for that risk. College players should be paid something as well, in my opinion, but that is a different topic.....
