They should get paid as much as people want to pay them.

They're only paid that much because of the value their audience places in them. It's like anyone else in the entertainment industry.

Star athletes get paid as much as they do because of the market. Pro sports are big money industries with lots of demand for stars, but real talent is in short supply. For any team sport, good players and good seasonal records draw in big ticket sales and big merchandise sales, so teams have a vested interest in getting the best players they can afford. Teams that have lots of money can offer lots of money in order to outbid other teams, so in-demand players make loads of cash.

A lot of people have touched on it, but the bottom line is - athletics is a huge money making industry. Consider how much revenue is generated from advertising, merchandising, ticket sales, public appearances, etc. The athletes, while putting their own physical well being on the line, are the ones who are generating that revenue for the sports teams. Yes, they are earning the money they are getting. They are generating those profits, of course the ones actually doing the work should profit as well from their business. It's like any other business.

Consider this - If you worked for a multi-billion dollar company which required you to put your body in harms way constantly as part of the work you do - would you expect to be paid only a little or a lot?

I am pretty sure the high pay is also due to the high risk of getting hurt. Between spinal injuries, broken bones, and concussions, hospital bills cost a fortune.

I think college athletes should get a full ride especially if their games get a lot of media support. Meals, liviing expenses, classes, books, club fees, and transportation to certain places should all be payed for. No salary, if you give these young man a lot of money they will most likly get themselves in trouble which will not only hurt the athlete but also the school. Instead they should have team "parents" people who watch over them with their studies or other things if they dont already do. For pro athletes they should definatly get paid that much. Just like musicians and actors, all entertainers usually spend their whole career spending ridiculous hours doing what they do best. It will be unreasonable if the owners get payed all the money but the people they make money off of get only peeanuts. the only reason why doctors and engineers dont get payed with a 80 million salary because the compaines dont have clients that spend millions on them.

When you consider how much entertainers make, even though economies are tanking and countries are floundering....

Then again, Johnny Depp making a ton of money makes sense for all his entertainment. One guy making millions for kicking a ball twenty times a year... I don't get it.

But I was never a sports fan. I always thought scientific advancement was more important. *Shrugs*

Where have you been? College athletes have been getting paid for years in the form of full ride scholarships and gifts. Do I think they (or even pro athletes) should be paid so much? NO. But, I do not find watching sports entertaining, so that kind of goes without saying.

I'm not going to complain about it, though, because it does no good, and I don't want the entertainment that matters to me taken away.

That is something else I do not understand. You get all that scholarship to go to college, to LEARN. but you are not there because you are smart, but because you play an arbitrary sport. Obviously, it is only done because it raises more money for the college. But it is nice to know intelligence isn't as important as athleticism when it comes to education. Athleticism has its place, but actual, you know, intelligence and proving you as an individual will benefit society is more important to me then being able to throw or catch or kick a ball. If you like sports that is great. But why such high priority?

I will start off by saying I'm not a sports fan and don't keep track of or watch any games.

Do I think Pro Athletes deserve to get paid as they do? YES, I believe they deserve every bit of what they earn. They are in an extremely physically demanding environment with a very good chance of receiving crippling injuries that will severely diminish their chances of earning any kind of income later in life.

Do I think college athletes should get paid? NO with the exception of scholarships for playing on the team. Playing on the team is their obligation if they have a sports scholarship whether they intend to go pro or are just using their athletic ability to attend a certain college and study the field they plan to really go into.

I believe they're not even supposed to get a 10th of what they currently earn. Most football players earn an average man's lifetime salary in 1 MONTH, that is ridiculous. It doesn't matter if they're the best of the best, they still get overpaid for what they actually do.
