let's be honest, if there was an esoteric series that tickled your fancy, do you really expect it to go mainstream?

If you're in any biz for creative purposes, it seems like it's gonna be somewhat watered down because of the fear that "people don't want change".

Also, don't let "the industry" get you down, the anime/manga/comic/media world has everything for everyone, it's just a matter of what you're looking for and where you're looking for it at

Every form of entertainment caters to their audience. The whole point of entertainment is to entertain audiences.

If you make creative content for yourself out of some self-righteous idea of "maintaining integrity," you won't last as a business unless thousands of other people enjoy the same material. Even indie/alternative bands, filmmakers, etc. have an audience of people who like that sort of thing (like old-school rap, or classic B-movie horror flicks). You don't write books, draw manga, or create anime for yourself. You do it for the many others who will pick it up and feel something, people who will enjoy and understand your story and characters, either because they're attractive, reminiscent, or exciting to their tastes. Why would you invest in a show and spend countless hours on it if you're just going to waste your time and money?

Movies cast beautiful people who can act well. Bands make music that sounds good.
Anime producers make cool/cute characters with sad backstories, emotional eyes, and earth-shattering superpowers.

I think you should give examples of past anime that didn't cater to their audiences at the time.
What shows, to you, had integrity?

This isn't new or even a phenomenon. Every industry caters to its hard core market because it's almost guaranteed cash, the anime industry is no exception. Am I totally sick of boring cliched harem and ecchi shows? Yes but it's not going to change and even then just because it adheres to the generic it doesn't necessarily mean it will be bad. This season seems to be going all out with harem/ecchi shows but I can't say I mind too much as there's quite a few interesting shows like "The Perfect Insider" and "Beautiful Bones" airing as well to keep me entertained.

Its all about the monetary gain. Why try something risky and possibly lose money when you can recycle things that worked in the past and things that tend to work in general (ecchi/fan service). /imagined rationale. A lot of people will buy into both of these, some will actually try to defend it, and others have to sigh while searching for something that interests them among whatever is given.

It's terrible, why aren't they catering to the wargaming community? We get tons of card game shows, but no Infinity, Warhammer (40k), or WarmaHordes.

because they dont want to be the next Manglobe.

Damn... I think that was a little too soon haha.
Manglobe was one of my favorite studios and its sad to see them file for bankruptcy but yea I think seeing that made other studios cater more toward their select audiences and the original story, art, and etc to kind of fade..

The problem isn't catering to audiences.
The problem is catering to panty fetishists.

But to be fair, this has been going on for a very long time.

OMG yes! could you imagine it?! Something like full sized imperator titans and Tau crisis suits being animated with all the bravado and machismo of something like Yugiho haha I'd love it.

For me personally, I'm the opposite, I want more grimdark.
I'd really like to see the Ciaphas Cain novels get animated, or even the Eisenhorn/Ravenor Series.
Actually anything Imperial Guard or Inquisitor related. Because it's more of a human approach versus white bread Space Marines.
