Definitely research. I've read a lot of magical realism set in fictional nations that are supposed to be modeled from real ones, and it's really obvious when the author has done detailed research into the nations they are basing their culture/government off of. Having the knowledge allows you to add the fictional elements in a way that doesn't seem incongruous.

Explain your opinion in great detail.

I'm writing a novel with an empire set on a futuristic planet modeled after the Roman Empire. I want to make up my own events that were similar to the events that happened in Rome. It's about how an empire started off as a weak kingdom but overtime grew with up becoming a powerful empire. I'm writing about the rise, growth, fall, and raise again of the empire. I wanted to know if I should read books on Rome to get a better understanding of what the empire was like before, during, and after it's rise and fall. Or should I just write the story my way with little understanding of Rome which I am modeling my fictional empire after. What do you think I should do? Is it possible to make this a story? I mean it's not just about the empire, it's also about an immortal clan who rules the empire and the empire as well. Help is wanted.

Enjoy!!!

Have you seen anime movie call Highlander: The Search for Vengeance? And yes the profile picture is Marcus Octavius from Roman Empire! He is Villan! Well, he consider himself a Bringer of Civilization.. While the main character is Barbarian! He trying to rebuild Romen Empire in his own way.

It show him surviving for 2,000 years, as the story progress it'll show serveral flash back of him and the main character conflicted.

Here picture of him.

Dude! Reseach that bad boy. You'd be suprised what comes out of what you learn. History is interesting and it is also public domain!

You can't go wrong with either. It can inspire you and get you to a point where you may not have gone before. It helps you pick up nuances and make your story actually live. It can make your characters really come alive.
