Funny how no one mentioned Contra: Shattered Soldier, which is mentioned on Youtube plenty of times.

Hardest games for me are Platformers. I've always been frustratingly bad at them.

Not to be funny, but freaking Battletoads was nightmare to play. I remember renting a copy from Blockbuster in my youth (wow, I feel old), neither I or my older brother could get pass that 3rd level no matter how hard we tried. Forget about Dark Souls, Battletoads is the real deal, my hats off to anyone who can beat that monstrosity.

The old school 8-bit Nintendo/Arcade games were tough as hell.

- Battletoads and Contra have been mentioned.

- Ghosts n' Goblins, an action/platformer, will give you nightmares.

- Battle Kings of Ancient China (a strategy/historical sim by Koei) required you to build an empire from scratch to defeat the powerful (current) emperor, and do it within a short, fixed number of turns.

- Rygar was a hard adventure game with some rpg elements... and with no save function, whatsoever.

- And Mike Tyson on the original Mike Tyson's Punch Out was a beast.

Don't know if I was just bad or if the game was horribly made, but Vampire Rain It was like, "No matter where I go I die, oh you gave me a gun let me use it... absolutely no difference why even give me the gun." I didn't even progress that far, dropped the game after playing it for a week hours at a time.

Oh god, I remember that game. It was more about Stealth than just outright taking on Vampires. I ended up progressing a long way but since the game was a hire, I had to return it and never got to finish it since my 360 decided to get the RROD. You didn't really miss much, but the game was definitely horribly made. It's like they were trying to take the stealth aspect from Splinter Cell just to combine it with Vampires that will pretty much one-shot you.

Dark Souls isn't the hardest game.....it's challenging but it's doable. At least, it has controls. Try any of the lesser known games out there with outright broken controls, it'll give you a new definition of what "hard game" means. DS is pretty brutal, not gonna lie.

The Magic Carta game in Tales of Graces on Hard is ridiculously frustrating and near impossible to score perfect. I'll be the first one to say something different.

There are also a lot of highly competitive games with easy learning curves, but to play at the higher or highest levels is extremely difficult. It all depends on what perspective you're taking in a topic like this one.

like others have said, all those 8bit games. most of them were ridiculous and no saves D:<
i think that's what made most of them so hard. you might get like 3 continues and then it's back to square one. funny enough it never made me rage back then, but games now do LOL :c

I posted it before you commented :0

Monster Hunter series is pretty rough.

I'd vouch to say Disgaea kind of is give or take, depending upon how many hours you want to invest.

Some MMO's can be when it comes to raiding.

Etrian Mystery Dungeon and the Etrian Odyssey's are other examples.

Shin Megami Tensei more or less.

I heard Natural Doctrine was so hard that they had to come up with a patch for the JP version because they were getting feedback that it was too hard.

Faster Than Light on hard, but this can happen on all difficulties.

You'll be hours into a game doing all good and suddenly get damaged - then run into an asteroid field - then run into a solar flare - then cry and start over.

I call this the hardest game I've ever played due to the fact if you screw up - make wrong choices - or just get unlucky. You lose. Game Over.

Even if you survive to the boss. If you don't have the ability to kill the boss effectively - You lose.

Since a playthrough can take several hours (more depending on how far you get) it can get really rough when you suddenly lose it all and have to start over from scratch.

The first Splinter Cell game was pretty hard especially on the harder difficulty. I did finish it though.
