Neon Genesis Evangelion,or more simply Eva,is no doubt of the most famous anime the history has ever known.Even till this day, with the release of the movies, they make sure that Eva will not be forgotten.

Eva is not just a mecha anime, where heroes vs bad guys stuff.Yes,they do have to fight these giant space creatures known as “Angels”.In order to solve this,Nerv is formed, where 14 year old kids pilot robots to fight the Angels. And btw,the robots are known as Evangelion.

However,it isn’t just about fighting. What the writer really wants you to focus on,is the thoughts of the characters. When you read their minds,it’s like you will subconsciously say to yourself “Damn, humans are very complex being……”

It is kind of weird you know, the way character development in this anime progressed. It promotes character development in an extreme way; unlike most animes out there,it doesn’t promote character development throughout the anime rather,it may take up to entire episode just for that particular purpose, with many flashback scenes that I find annoying.Although this method enables character development,it is boring, you know.I hate flashback stuff.Very surprisingly,I am usually excited when an anime is near its conclusion, but I didn’t for this anime because it consisted of almost all still shots and re-used animation.I was cursing the ending, but luckily, the movies helped.

The animation is pretty decent for an anime that is released in 1995.However,it is not consistent, especially during the second half.I don’t know if it is just me,but it seem like there are constant repeating frames, and the animation quality dropped significantly.i am disappointed, but I tried to overlook that. The battles are good, and the I love the mecha designs, especially The Evangelions.

Moving on to the characters,Shinji is not your typical hero in a mecha anime who are brave and aims to save the world from blah blah blah………He is an annoying, weenie guy whom I thought is an anti-hero very much like Cloud Strife when I was proven wrong…….But you got to pity that poor kid too,he more or less doesn’t have a family, and was actually thrown into some sort of mindfuck programe during the last few episodes. And the girl that Shinji has a very complex relationship,Rei is an enigmatic character.Personally,I like her best out of the three.Asuka, another annoying kid who pilots Evangelion wasn’t that interesting to watch, but at least I like her better than Shinji. All those three characters along with Gendo Ikari,Shinji’s useless father,Misato and a bunch of other characters play a vital role in making Eva what it is today.(Btw,I can never fully apprehend the disappearance of Touji.)

The plot is brilliant in my opinion,it slowly unfolds from a typical mecha anime to a complex, deep, and dark anime. The dream sequences are brilliant,it keeps you thinking, and I love animes that make me think, instead of just watching it.There are a lot of emotional stuff here, but I think that is necessary to balance the show.I don’t quite get the religious concepts in here, since I am not all that religious, but it seem to me there are some religious references here?

In conclusion,Eva is one of the best mecha anime,if not the best.It may seem really confusing, but it is because it is much “deeper” than other mecha animes where good guys battle bad guys and in the end,the world is peaceful again and everyone lives. It stray far from that, and definitely not your normal mecha anime. You can’t get enough. It has flaws too like some I stated above, but you will still love it.

Neon Genesis Evangelion was great, along with being one of the most confusing ever.

With all the soul-searching, something about the complexity of humans, human's inability to understand the divine, along with all the religious references and the plethora of existential themes about humans also makes Evangelion something very deep.

The character development is skewed and confusing, the characters usually gaining some sort of understanding after some epiphany they experience in that little train sequence, or long-winded flashbacks that have a way of getting annoying.

The characters are different from every other mecha anime characters, even up to now:

-Shinji, hates his father and has an internal struggle with himself about what he wants to do. Even up to the end, his struggle went on.

-Rei, second and third clones to hold the soul of Yui Ikari, Rei II being prominent in the series, developing to be someone more human, then gets killed and her humanity is back to square one.

-Asuka, proud and angry German girl who has some deep psychological problems about her mother, and that part was never resolved.

There are many complexities in Eva, characters being the least of them. One is the Evas themselves, being something between Real Robot and Super Robot, many just settled in calling them hybrids. The other being the concept of Third Impact, and all of what's attached with it. Another is the animation sequences, some parts being repetitive, other parts being downright lazy, probably the thing that reduced Evangelion's appeal.

The music is great, some being classic, like "Canon in D", others being new but following classical style, such as "Both of You, Dance Like You Want to Win". The character designs are good, being delivered well with the art styles of the time.

But the part which can really drag people in is the plot, something so skewed, so confusing, you get lost rather easily. But if you get it, it might incite you to do some of your own soul searching.

It's one of those animes where you have to use your brain to understand. It leaves the end of the series in the open, so that you are left to make some of your own decisions on what became of the characters. But then the beloved movies came out, and they just confuse you even more! But they have the last bit of action in it to let o know who died, who lived, and what became of the world and the angels.

You have to pay attention the entire time you watch this, you might even want to take notes. It might take a few times re-watching to finally get all of it, I still don't get all of it. It's a reletivly short series compared to others, but it is extremly memorable and it makes up in filling those 22 minutes with non-stop information. It's also a good anime if you like the huge amounts of blood!(at certain points.)

And the music is nice, mostly orchestra, with the opening song nice and trendy, and the closing song is a different version of 'Fly Me to the Moon', a classic jazz ballad sung by many great singers.

Yes Evangelion, I liked the animation, liked some of the episodes more then others. But to me, It was still one of the worst anime Ive ever watched. I guess its just not my thing. Its not that I didn't like Shinji's personality, or the complexity of the anime, I liked that, its just....for some reason at the end of it all I looked back on it and just hated it.

Il'l show the pros of this anime:

In America and other countries Evangelion isn't very popular because people never actually looked into the anime. But in Japan
Neon Genesis is "the best anime ever created"

The story is very symbolic to the Christian Religion. The angels, the tree of sephiroth, the meteor that landed on earth in the year 2000 (orginally Jesus was suppose to come back and create "Judgement Day" a day were all human beings were suppose to lift up to the heavens and the damned be burn in hell. It is as all living beings were to become "one". )
2000 ( the year is a millienium that is why Jesus was suppose to return how ever the human race did not die for it's longing to "live" )

The character line is just beautiful simply beautiful. a number of people can relate with the characters of Evangelion and almost every character has a full-growth development.Sure they have flash backs but it's very deep, you can understand why the characters have became this and you can see the development in them. The only major bashing that came out of this anime was outside of Japan.

Orignally, in the T.V. series, the creator of this anime became very depressed so he had trouble in making the anime during that state. He decided to make the anime phiolosophical and help people out of thier depression and it was a sucess in Japan. The movie was very orginal and unique because you can see Asuka's break through from her mental problem. In the end it was very cold that it sended many viewers "shivers down thier spines" as they said it is and at the same time they became content with the ending.

To show Japan's Anime Industry love for it. They created a remake (which became a movie) of it, but it's ending will be far different from the t.v.'s series ending and they created many spin offs of it just to make it living.
And in Animenewsnetwork it is offical that America is now making a movie of Neon Genesis Evangelion right now
which is about 160-180 million dollars in budget.

Outside of Japan affects; there have been many band;s that have fell in love with this anime and had actually based of some lyrics out of Evangelion.
Look at the top it's impact in America

You may not love it, but Japan sure does.

I loved the part where Shinji and Asuka fought with music. It was really cool.
