Didn't see your edit, sounds neat, but holy shit some of this stuff they are trying out isn't ready for prime-time.

I don't disagree.

I'm guessing at least 10 years. Longer before the systems will be fully reliable in adverse conditions.

A lot of adverse weather can mess up current systems, snow for example.

It's not a sensor issue though. The cameras on a pair of iPhones provide all the data input needed to safely navigate a vehicle. The algorithms to fully utilize that data are years away. Add 360 coverage from radar/ladar systems that are clearly superior to human senses, plus GPS, and the potential is there to make autonomous divers safer than human drivers. The current weak point is software, not hardware.

Add in a ton of moral and ethical issues: say the vehicle is put in an unavoidable situation. It must chose between hitting a school bus or a pedestrian. It's not a question of reaction speed, with millisecond responses the vehicle will have time to make a choice. Who do you program the autonomous vehicle to kill? Who is liable for that choice, the manufacturer or the owner?

Another problem is the hand-off.

Computer goes be-boop ERROR!

*hands off to driver*

*driver has no idea what to do in a crisis because the computer has been driving for months*

What about us who can't drive and need something like this?

Plus it wouldn't be hard to teach people the basics so if that does happen it's not a big deal.

If it isn't a big deal, then why can't you drive?

I zone out whilst doing complex things for some reason that and my vision blurs.
Also if there is to much going on Sound , Vision , Smell i can't focus so to even drive at all i would need to eliminate my hearing (ear plugs) and have the car clean smelling good.

Driving a car that doesn't drive itself would mean putting others at risk hence why im all for self driving cars.

Last time i tried to learn to drive i got shouted at by the instructor because i was given vague rules to follow.
For example they said to put my foot on the breaks so i did as fast as i could they basically were like NO DRIVING FOR YOU.

To be honest they should have been more specific... but yeah due to a fear of driving reinforced with reasons why it would be bad for me to drive ... a self driving car is much safer then me driving a car.

Yeah, you'd kill a lot of people if the computer handed off to you in a time of crisis.

I would be able to steer and break.

still i need to be able to drive a car where i live it's basically you can't get a job without a car....this will make it possible for me to get a job that isn't at mcdonalds or something :)

I'm going to be on the road in the next five years driving myself or car doing it for me because i have to take that those risks if i want to get a job.

I hope self-driving cars become a thing. I don't like to drive (in fact, I have driving phobia) and I have bad reflexes.
