I enjoy a good romance manga, and generally don't care about supposed target audience. (Some of my favorites include Ah My Goddess!, Ai Yori Aoshi, Love Hina, Special A, Maid-Sama, My Love Story, etc.)

That being said, I've had a hard time finding any josei manga that I really love. Most josei has at least one of the following problems:

- A heroine who is completely stupid, has no interests other than finding a man, and is an absolute push-over.
- The main guy is an absolute asshole who I would recommend people cross the street to avoid.
- A cavalier attitude about sexual assault: it's common, no one gets in trouble for it, there is an attitude of "she'll like it in the end, so it's okay", and all too often its perpetrated by the main guy.

Anyway, I think I've only read sixjosei manga that I didn't hate:

-- Usagi Drop (which isn't really a romance... well, not the best part of it, anyway)
-- Handmade Ojousama
-- Kitchen Palette
-- Love Blog
-- Oishii Kankei
-- Kimi wa Petto

Can anyone recommend any others to me? (Note: I don't mind smut, but I have trouble getting into hardcore yaoi or yuri and tend to prefer straight romances.)

High School Debut I really like same writer as My Love Story- MC is a girl who is athletic but wants to have romance in her life so she hires a guy in school to be her tutor on how to be cool and popular only condition to rule she cant fall in love with him......
After My Love Story anime ended I started reading this manga and it doesn't disappoint great real writing

I didn't realize High School Debut was considered josei and not shoujo; anyway, I've read it and like it a lot.

I haven't read Orange yet; I'll look into it.

I strongly recommend anything (josei or shoujo) written by Ikuemi Ryou.

And these too:

7 Seeds (action/adventure/drama/horror/josei/romance/psychological) by Tamura Yumi (author of Basara)
Futago (josei/romance/drama) by Iketani Rikako (author of Six Half, which is excellent even though it's shoujo)
Dame na Watashi ni Koishite Kudasai (josei/romance/comedy/drama/SoL) by Nakahara Aya (author of Lovely Complex)
Cheese in the Trap (comedy/drama/josei/romance/mystery/psychological) by Soon Ki (Korean manhwa author)
Toukyou Tarareba Musume (josei/drama/comedy/romance/satire?) by Higashimura Akiko (author of Kuragehime)
Chihayafuru (josei/sports/drama/SoL/adapted into anime) by Suetsugu Yuki
Honey and Clover (josei/romance/SoL/adapted into anime) by Umino Chika
Namida ame to Serenade (josei/historical/romance/time travel), and Sekine-kun no Koi (josei/romance/SoL) by Kawachi Haruka
Koudaike no Hitobito (josei/romance/comedy/supernatural/SoL) by Morimoto Kazueko (although I only liked the earlier chapters)

I've also heard a lot of good things about these but haven't gotten around to reading them:
Ginban Kishi
Nanatsuya: Shinobu no Housekibako
Bread & Butter
Mephistopheles wa Dare?
Koiji
Nikoniko Nikki
Gokusen
Clover

And I would avoid smut, they almost always have shallow characters no different from those in typical shoujo, and the stories rarely go beyond "he loves me, he loves me not".
