Since it's almost Halloween, I thought I'd tell you one of my favorite ghost stories.

Kuchisake-Onna, or the slit mouthed woman, is a vengeful Japanese ghost that haunts the streets of Japan. She approaches people ranging in age from elementary school kids to college students while wearing a surgical mask. When she approaches someone, she will ask "Am I pretty?". If the victim says no, the woman stabs them with a pair of scissors. If the victim says yes, she will take off her mask, revealing a hideous slit across her mouth and ask "How about now?". If the victim answers yes again, she will slit their mouth so that it looks like hers.

Sightings of her were prevalent in the 1970s and 1980s, causing scares in many towns. There have even been reports of increased police patrols and schools escorting students home for safety.

The story of Kuchisake-Onna originates back to the day of the samurai. A samurai husband found out her wife was cheating on him. Enraged, he sliced her mouth from ear to ear, giving her the famous slit.

Do you believe in Kuchisake-Onna? Do you think she's real?

Have you ever encountered her?

Below is a picture of her. Click the spoiler...if you dare.

Nothing a little thread and needle won't fix. Maybe a little concealer and I give her an 8

Q: Do you believe in Kuchisake-Onna? I believe how the story originated, a samurai slit his wife's mouth open for cheating. Although, I hope he killed the other samurai who forced himself on her.

Q: Do you think she's real? No.

Q: Have you ever encountered her? Never been to Japan.

Did they get this idea from the Joker? Or is the other way around.

Anyway, what happens if you say she's ugly the 2nd time she asks the question?

Is she a Yahoo Answers member?

I don't think ghosts are scary. They can't do anything to us. Humans are scarier than ghosts, especially serial killers.

They are free to watch, as long as they don't touch.

Apparently this one stabs and cuts people, unless she's a living serial killer.

She was probably a real human. But people mistaken her for a ghost maybe because in the past, Asian women don't tan themselves, and became pale as ghosts. With the long black hair and scarred mouth, nobody would believe you're a human.

Do I think it's real? No.

But, the story is interesting. A question like, "Am I pretty?" to a stranger is totally fishing for compliments. But if you are rude to her, you are punished. But then when you see her mouth, if you continue the farce, having seen something ugly, you are punished. Seems like a cautionary tale about being sensitive to others about their appearance.

As for the ghost originating from a revenge killing for infidelity, well that makes it a little complicated.
