Post Reply What does everyone think of heavy metal and metalheads?
Posted 10/20/15
I really only listen to metal. IMO that try to be "metal" by wearing clothing and trying to be hardcore are just posers.
I am myself, but I love, listen to, and play metal music.
I don't really think you can look at me and say "that guy likes heavy metal". Even though it's a silly thing to do to judge ones personality over music, (even if it's hard to do).

I think its normal to dress like the musicians that you like. But probably more so when you are young, particulary when your a kid and teenager.
But there are posers. Like iam a hip hop head and i guess i used to dress hip hop style, but not at all like the full on wiggers and posers.
Probably a similar thing with metal heads i guess but here in Australia adults that like metal still fress that way, you can almsot always tell a metal head.
I look more like a nerd than a hip hop head now a days lol.
But hey, Aussies are know to be bogans and to like rock, so i guess Aussie adults dress more like bogan rockers as oppsoed to metal heads i guess.
When i go to metal pubs they all seem to dress in tight clothes and dark clothes, usually.

I saw a guy with a T-Shirt that read, "SATAN IS MY ANIMAL SPIRIT" I was thinking, "Oh! He's into death metal, or speed metal, or something like that. He was pierced on both ears and below his lower lip, tattooed, and wore wild hair. So, I was like, "Oh yeah, death metal or speed metal!!"

I said to him, "Ah! So, you're looking to make a statement and shock the masses with your T-shirt, eh?" He said to me, "I don't know. It might just be my religion..." I thought, "......"

I am into metal music it is an outlet. I also like other genres of music too. When I am having one of those
days where everything goes wrong I like to play metal music makes me feel better. Not one to judge people
on how they dress or what they listen to, but hey to each their own.

I guess I'd call myself a metalhead. I started listening to metal back in the early '80s, when it was surging in popularity, and I still listen to a lot of it to this day, namely Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Black Sabbath, Ozzy Osbourne, Metallica, and countless others. I'm not too up on today's scene, but most or all of those groups are still going. So, while its not my only or even necessarily my favourite genre, it's a big part of my music listening experience.

As for the style, I did sometimes wear those shirts with the 3/4 length sleeves and band logos or iron-ons on the front, and had posters on my wall, but I never really banged my head, did the devil horn salute, held up a lighter at a concert, or sported long, stringy, mullet-y hair.

I love all the bands that you mentioned (Maiden is my favorite 80's metal band and their concerts are so much fun if you've ever been to one of them), plus AC/DC, Aerosmith, Kiss, Rush, Megadeth, Dio, The Scorpions, Van Halen, Motley Crue, Motorhead, and of course, Led Zeppelin. I'm a fan of 70's/80's hard rock/heavy metal, but this isn't the only genre I listen to. I'm pretty much a classic rock guy in general, plus I also like some blues. As for the new metal, well I never got into the Nu Metal scene, nor am I a fan of death/black metal (those Norwegian black metal bands are a scary lot) or grindcore. But there are some newer bands that still stick to the game. The Irish band The Answer and the Austin based band Scorpion Child are two fine bands that play old school 70's style hard rock while the German metal band Blind Guardian is a decent power metal band that's worth taking your chances on.

I like all of those too, and I'd also add Deep Purple and Thin Lizzy to the list. Iron Maiden are my favourite metal band by far...nobody else approaches their level of songwriting and performance, and, even 30+ years on, they're still cranking out great music. I'll also have to check out some of the newer bands you mentioned.

I realized that I technically didn't answer the OP's question, as to what I think of metal and metalheads? Metal itself is an endlessly fascinating and diverse form of music, and metalheads...well, I think of average people like myself.

Most metal heads are actually pretty chill, but people always think of them as violent.

I don't get the appeal, but let them do them.

I do have a bad taste in my mouth, because I had a roommate who was a metalhead. He was a douchebag, and always doing shit to me (like taking my keys and locking them in my car). But when it finally came down to a physical confrontation, he turned out to be a wuss. I didn't even hurt him, all that bad. He locked me and my friend out of the house, and when we got the door open, he ran and hid in the bathroom. :/

Not saying that is all or even most metalheads... probably even gives them a bad name... I'm just saying that when I hear metal, I think of that POS, again.
