Personally, I'm fine with it as long as it's done in one of two ways. First, in moderation and as appropriate to the show in question. If your story and characters are supposed to be the focus, then make them the focus. Second, if your show is pure fan service then go with it and have fun.

The only sort of fan service that really annoys me is when a show can't decide what it wants to do or be regarding it's fan service. Don't just put in fan service because you think you have to (you don't), and if you're going to trend towards fan service then don't be afraid of it. Own it.

I don't care that much, anymore. Because an anime with no fanservice, but boring story or music can be just as bad or worse.

Fan service is like spices or seasoning: Too much can ruin the dish, and a little can make something that would otherwise be terribly bland at least palatable, and some foods need nothing added at all for most people. Likewise, one's opinion of what is too little or too much can vary.

It really depends on what's important to the show and why the fanservice exists in that anime in the first place. Shows like To Love-Ru, Highschool of the Dead, and Highschool DxD are all about fanservice. Looking at all three of these together, you'd only see fanservice done because fanservice. To Love-Ru uses fanservice in ways that correspond with what Yuuki Rito is like, as does Highschool DxD (Except to a much greater extent due to Issei being a pervert). Whereas Highschool of the Dead uses it simply because what's better than a Highschool Zombie Apocalypse? A highschool zombie apocalypse with attractive female characters who have giant bouncing boobs.

For shows where plot is important, there'll be little to no fanservice.

Just seems a waste that fan service is seen as the silver bullet for an anime these days. It's like these studios are basing their decisions on "we don't have a story, a plot, or any character development...I know, let's just do fan service" instead of making decent anime. Not to mention bust sizes getting beyond ridiculous with all the main characters having at least H-cups and even the loli mains running around with F-cups. And let's not get started on how ridiculous statues made of these characters look.

Fan service is a topping to be used lightly to make something already good even better. Like putting ketchup on a hamburger. Way too much anime these days is ketchup with nothing else on the bun.

I don't mind as long as it's up to the high school dxd point or the testament of Sister New devil I don't mind fanservice as long as that's not the plot.

I don't like fanservice of any kind, I think it diminishes the story.

I assume we are talking about sexual fanservice? Fanservice is more than boobs an panty-shots. Any time something happens that the fans really want to happen (Adult Joestar using his catchphrase after an entire season of not hearing it), or when a cameo appears from a popular former work (Isaac and Miria appearing in Durarara), those are also fanservice. The reason this sexual stuff is called fanservice is because it's what they expect the viewers "want" to see.

As for me, the former fanservice is great. The latter is okay in moderation if done tactfully. A good example of this is the bath scene in the most recent Utawarerumono. It wasn't forced or overly sexualized. When fanservice is blown out of proportion, it ruins the show. A good example of this: The Testament of Sister New Devil.

Depending on the target market or what the type of people the show is trying to attract. After all.... sex sells.....

Everyones going to have different opinions about this...

I think fan service is terrible. Look at Attack on Titan and Berserk. Absolutely unnecessary. I wish they do away with the fan service in both series. I'm tired of getting the urge to violently do you know what every time I see the naked female titan.

As I am not sexually attracted to 2d characters than I am frequently in the 'who cares' category. But I also note that if it is done tactfully and in terms of being integral to the plot I can be okay with it. For example it was okay in High School DxD is a good example of this. But don't get me started on the dubbed version which took the perviness way over the line from the original Japanese intentions.

It all depends on the anime, of course. For the most part, unless it's a fairly serious anime, or unless fanservice has been absent, but then in one episode they just throw all their perviness at it, or unless they shove it so shamelessly in your face, I don't care. For the most part, it doesn't influence my view on an anime, in any way.

It was decent. I enjoyed he used illustrations from Saekano -How to Raise a Boring Girlfriend- where they actively used a trope then dissected it for comedic purposes (esp. true in the first episode). I just wish the illustrations were clickable for a large image. Not bad and I tend to agree with him. It's also a good thing I read the entire thread because I forgot I had already answered the OP.
