Out of curiosity, what series have let you guys down? For whatever reason :sweatingbullets:. For me, these are just series that were really interesting and seemed really great for a while... Then kind of fell off.

Anime:
Honey & Clover (One of those ones that I think could've been a classic. I've heard similar things about Usagi Drop?)
The Devil is a Part-Timer
DNAngel (This gave me fears that if I got into a relationship, I would become really boring. LOL)

Manga:
Skip! Beat (WHY. VALENTINE'S DAY PART 20, BOYS.)
The Wallflower (I don't really know what happened here)
Bleach (I think I got frustrated with the lack of plot/character development after some chapter in the hundreds, but granted I haven't tried to pick it up since.)
Chihayafuru

--
I feel bad listing all these ones that fell through in my eyes, so here's some series that REALLY exceeded my primarily low-or-neutral expectations. (I don't think these were ever bad to begin with though. I wonder if there are any series out there that really pulled themselves together?)

Anime: Kill la Kill, Kuroko no Basuke (this started with me liveblogging their outrageous antics and then I fell hard.)
Manga: Oyasumi Punpun, Assassination Classroom

Akame ga kill- they weren't sticking the the main premises of the manga story and decided let's kill oft some characters.

I'm just waiting for the obligatory "Aldnoah/Zero" comment.

... Also, TAKE THAT BACK ABOUT THE DEVIL IS A PART-TIMER!!! That's one of my favourites!

For anime, 5 Centimeters per Second. I'd heard a lot of hype about it being a tear-jerking drama, but (I guess appropriately, considering its theme) I see it as a missed opportunity. They give you a couple characters and relationships to invest in, and then just kind of shrug and say "Yeah, that's all." I get that it's trying to say that life doesn't always provide a conclusion to the stories it gives us, but in saying that, I feel like they're missing the point of fiction, I guess. We all deal with people drifting away from us, but while it's familiar, it's pedestrian. Wouldn't it have made for a better story if they'd struggled more? In the end, it's a drama that's more or less devoid of drama.

For manga, Uzumaki. Again, I went in following some very promising hype. I love a good atmospheric horror story, and I was really impressed by the first couple chapters. It was nicely twisted and gruesome, and mysterious and suspenseful enough to catch my interest. But as I read on, I realized that the author wasn't interested in making me care about the characters. It was just arc after arc of "introduce a new character who ends up dying in a bizarre way and/or threatening the protagonist", but they never really got into the protagonist herself, or any of the recurring supporting cast. It's a shame, because some of the ideas were quite inspired, but in the end, it felt like a B-Movie, not the masterpiece it could have been, because none of the deaths felt significant.

I have pulled apart your argument and found its contradiction, lying in the audience's response from Steins;Gate - the very origin of your profile picture!

Anime: Cross Ange

It starts with a very convincing tale of some one trying to get over the challenges of their situation but after three episodes it very quickly turns in to a joke.

An anime that was a let down for me was Deadman Wonderland. I don't hate it, but I feel like that show could've been a lot better than it was. It started off great, but it went downhill and the ending felt rushed.

As for an anime that turned out to be better than I expected, I'd say Nobunaga Concerto. The first episode was kinda meh to me, but as the series went on it got a lot better. It turned out to be a pleasant surprise in the end.

Sword Art Online - Couldn't make it past the fourth episode
Otome Youkai Zakuro - I really liked the manga, but the anime wasn't as great as I expected. Zakuro seemed way too tsundere...
The anime focused more on love progressions rather than the plot itself, but it's still a decent one to watch.
