Are you in the dark? Do you sleep at odd hours? Is it affecting your ability to learn in class?

Does this sound like you? What do you think? Could some simple changes help you get through school better. Where do you stand on this issue? )

Getting an adequate amount of sleep has never been an issue for me.

Throughout the years, I have always believed that developing good sleep habits

can be very beneficial for myself in school. I would notice after getting a good

night's rest that I could remember and learn lectures taught in class much quicker

than on nights I spent sleeping later.

I believe that sleeping at odd hours can undoubtly affect a person's ability

to learn in class. From my personal experience, whenever I stay up late I notice

the following day that I become very tired, moody, unable to concentrate and

retain anything taught in class. In experiments done at Harvard Medical School

and Trent University in Canada, results have shown that students who get a good

night's sleep improved in scores as opposed to students who got less than six

hours of sleep. The results of this experiment shows how effective sleep

deprivation can be on people. The students in the experiment after experiencing

sleep deprivation most likely found it difficult to concentrate and remember

information, much like myself.

Sleep has and always will be an indispensable part of being human. Sleep

is a necessity of life not only for humans, but almost all life as a whole. Without

it, many people wouldn't be able to survive. We use sleep to recharge ourselves

and it helps to eliminate stress we receive from school, work, and most of all life.

There are many advantages and disadvantages for people who have a good

night's sleep and for those who have bad night's sleep. An advantage of getting a

good night's sleep is having a good overall feeling of yourself. It enables you to

become more alert and energetic towards your goals. It also allows you to focus

more on completing tasks. When you get a bad night's sleep you become very

tired and can experience many symptoms. A few of the symptoms can be

depression, heart disease, hypertension, irritability , slower reaction times , slurred

speech and tremors. Sleep depreviation can slow our ability to think, handle stress

and weaken the body. Without the proper amount of sleep, the brain's ability to

function efficiently slowly deteriorates, making it harder to retain information and focus.

In the world today, their are many people who suffer from sleep disorders,

which is more common than people think. A person who suffers from sleeping

disorders usually has the inability to get enough sleep or experience quality sleep

during the night. Some common examples of sleep disorders that many people

experience are sleepwalking, jet-lag, night terror, and periodic limb movement

disorder. There are currently many methods for treating sleeping disorders

which include drugs, over-the-counter medication, herbal remedies and surgery.

In conclusion I believe that getting a good night's rest is very important

because it affects our physical, mental and emotional well-being. By making

simple changes in our sleeping patterns , the way we eat and becoming physically

active our mind and body becomes more energized to learn.
