Hurricane Patricia
Posted 10/23/15 , edited 10/23/15

PUERTO VALLARTA, Mexico (AP) -- Hurricane Patricia barreled toward southwestern Mexico Friday as a monster Category 5 storm, the strongest ever in the Western Hemisphere. Residents and tourists hunkered down or tried to make last-minute escapes ahead of what forecasters called a "potentially catastrophic landfall."

I'm on a bike tour and will probably get hit with whatever is left over once it hits the states, so I've been watching it closely. Looks like it could get really nasty.

Am I the only one wondering why hurricanes are usually given female names?

They were all female until 1979.

These days they actually alternate male/female. If you are interested http://geology.com/hurricanes/hurricane-names.shtml has more info on hurricane naming conventions than you would ever care to know.

Our Meteorological Office just held a public vote on storm names for the UK, though it looks like they have arranged them so they follow the conventions listed here. That was something I had no idea about.

Hope Mexico is able to recover from it. Hoping it doesn't reach the gulf part of TX either. That explains why we've been getting so much rain over the past few days… (つД`)ノ
