Not really. An adult is a fully developed person. During puberty, when you can start creating children you're still developing. I don't think anyone would say that you'd become an adult as soon as you're physically able to have children. But around 21, around when you become fully developed and end puberty that's when you become an adult, physiologically speaking.

Well thats how it is now but is wasn't like that in the past nor in some cultures today.
I do agree though that your not an adult until your fully developed.
But, we dont all develop as quickly as others so age is really just a number.

Fair enough, but even so, saying an adult is a fully developed person, as we've always been doing, even if a specific age can't is be pinpointed, is far simpler than using any of these other definitions that people won't agree on.

Yeah true mate. A number is easier to gauge than say a maturity level or etc
I knew i was an adult when young hotties stopped looking at me the same...
And when hang overs got oh so much worse and started to take so much longer to get over

Let me remind you all that I don't think this way. It's just some people in society that feel like this.

Yep. And when you stop relying on others and borrowing money off of other people all the time, not becasue you are struggling but becaue you just blow all your money on dumb shit.

Yeah man no doubt. I often get weird reactions when people ask me if iam married or if i have kids and my answer is no and no.
And if you tell someone that you dont plan to have kids some really cannot understand it at all.
And women at work ask me when am i going to settle down. Not sure if that means that they dont consider me an adult though?

I think "Married with kids" is a very white picket fence way to put it.
I think you become an adult when you have responsibilities beyond yourself and are working toward achieving them.
Some people grow up very early.
those responsibilities could be to a friend, coworker, lover, sibling, parent or ideal, not everyone needs the same stages to deserve the same respect.

Yeah I hate when people waste their money.

I only take a loan if I have no choice.

That's not my definition of an adult. I'm aware there are those who think like that but they can keep their opinion to themselves. I became legal adult at 18. Before that I'd already started to get responsibilities and was helping raise a baby even though I wasn't the mother.

But you can be trialed as an adult when you're of age for dangerous negligence.

My opinion which is the same as my parents is that one becomes an adult when they start thinking and acting like one and that it's never a determined age or when one completes a specific thing in life such as getting married.

"you're not an adult until you get married and have a family!!!!" is utter bs that should never be considered how to become an adult, although that life is good and you most certainly should as family is a great thing to have, it's not what determines when one is an adult.

I see grown men and women act like children all the time. Age is nothing more than a number that abides by legalities. Anything else is purely opinion. Marriage and having kids sure as hell doesn't define maturity because look at how stupid society is as a whole...

I wouldn't say there's any way to tell for sure, but if someone can be independent without mommy or daddy or whoever picking up the slack and make sound decisions/act mature then I see no reason not to view them as an adult. Again...this is aside from legalities.

I hear kids claim to be grown up and able to handle their own crap all the time. Maybe like 1% could if I had to guess.
I also see adults do stupid shit and act like a kid all the time too.

It's case by case in my opinion. I know a couple of children who act more like adults than their own parents do. I also know adults who should never reproduce again for the good of mankind...

It's hilarious when people get mad you call them a child though.

Well here are all the ways you first can NOT distinguish adults from non-adults:

Maturation can't be a distinguishing factor because that should be constant, and is not unique to adulthood.

Mental capacity can't be a distinguishing because you decline mentally after 25.

Financial independence can't be a distinguishing factor because anyone at any age may become dependent upon others financially.

Emotionally - Adults can behave like children, this is not unique or different to with adults.

You determine if someone is an adult by the law, which comes down to one's understanding of their behavior and the consequences of those behaviors. Law provides a non-discriminatory approach to settlign the question, using age which is the simplest as it provides the physiological uniqueness between teenager & adolescent. It also helps that the societal changes that occur at that age culturally reinforce that notion. For at 18 if you are not going to college you are going to the workforce as an adult.

Ah but that's a far different topic, I meant more in the means of what I consider to be a grown person.

There are plenty of childish people who are old, am I right?

I believe everyone should be charged for a crime regardless of age, you always know right from wrong.

The said could be said about any word used in a derogatory way.
