Different people have different motives for wanting to learn the language.

As for me, I would like to learn so that I can read import visual novels straight from Japan, and also as help if I ever visit the country.

Why would you want to learn?

started learning the language out of curiosity, because i like Japanese games.
something like, "hey, i like their games, maybe i should try learning the language for the fun of it"
i kinda know the basics, but i'm still learning.

So I can watch anime without having to read the subtitles, being bilingual is also great to have on your resume. Although I'm not sure that there's a big demand for the Japanese language.

Japan is largest Asian economy, to be outdone by China in a couple of years. How is there not a big demand?

Visual novels and light novels were my main reasons. Translations are still quite rare and lacking. Then there's just wanting to learn a language and Japanese seemed like something I would use.

Well, I meant where I live there doesn't seem to be a demand. There might be a demand, but I mostly jobs looking for people that can speak Spanish or Mandarin.

It's fairly common for me to listen to foreign music and not understand a word, but I listen to just enough Japanese to want to understand a bit by ear. Also, knowing Japanese is advantageous, should I eventually visit Japan, much less, also meet some of my extended family there.
