To read Light Novels and Mangas that will never get translated.
Then again; even my English is only decent at best. Won't even bother with Japanese.

I am hoping to get a English teaching job in Japan. And knowing Japanese will help in that matter, but I also want to get my Masters degree and PhD from Sophia university or Osaka University and most if not all of their classes are offered in Japanese. Furthermore, I would love to get a full time position as either a research professor and or work for a private research and development company in Japan and apply for citizenship after I have lived in Japan for 5 years. Plus my wonderful fiancé is Japanese and I can barely communicate with her mom. My best friend, her brother, and her older sister, who I am also friends with, both know English and so does she, so that barrier never really existed. But I want to communicate more with my future mother in law. Her father past away 2 years ago sadly

To be able to get jokes in anime shows that can only be understood if you know japanese, e.g. puns. Sometimes the subtitler put the explanation there, but it's not funny when jokes are explained to you :/

Music and entertainment. I like visual novels, anime, some jpop bands and jrock bands, games, etc. I'd like to be able to purchase these so that I can be of help to the creators. But there'd be no point if I didn't know what was what. I started learning about 2 or 3ish months ago. Obviously, I have a few years cut out for me, but, so far, the language has been pretty fun. Anime without having to speed read subtitles would be great obviously; visual novels take forever to get a translation; it'd literally open up 1000s of opportunities of great bands/groups to listen to; and the games are 100% better and some harder than most games that we get (living in America) (my opinion of course).

I'm specializing in Japanese Religion for my dissertation. I don't want to sound like a toddler while I'm studying overseas.

At the moment my studies can be summed up as...

jokes, I actually prefer Kanji to when everything's in hiragana... but furigana is essential.

ikr. kanji makes it easier to understand, assuming ofc you know the kanji (but even if you don't, it's easy to look it up, assuming it's not some ancient kanji that no-one ever uses or something)
