It's only weird if that's all you talk to.

I meow at my cat all the time. She either doesn't react or looks at me with shame.

I ask my dog how his day is going, whether or not he wants out, etc. I don't consider it weird.

It means you have problems associating with other people.

We all know that animals can understand words, but most of what we say is just noise to them. We command and give a reward. If not for some kind of reward system, they'd never listen.

I'm not convinced that this is the only reason to talk to them, at least in the case of some animals. I had a dog I swear understood complete sentences and another dog who was so stupid he didn't realize when we took out the fence. I think it depends more on the animal in question.

I don't think it's weird, but it's not because I think animals listen too! (I mean, I do think they listen, but that's not why I don't think it's weird).

Anyway, I've gone ahead and moved this thread to the Polls forum. Since it starts with a poll, that's where it goes!

I'd say people that don't talk are the weird ones. Especially, if the pet is dog.

No. Pets are members of the family, and as such deserve to be talked to. I like to talk to my pet tortoise.

I think it is cute that you do. I do the same with my cat, Precious. Precious "Meows" in response and she also lets me know when I need to pay attention to her.

No. We're vocal. We talk to them, though most only understand vocal and physical ques from us. Most try and communicate with us, too. Once again, most of us only comprehend the basics. Might as well make a sister-thread called, "Is talking to your humans weird?"

I'd say it would be more weird if you didn't, if we're talking about cats, dogs, etc, and not fish or ants. I do know why, but I'd just find talking to a pet fish weird.
