Lab Zero is proud to announce our new action/RPG, currently titled Indivisible.

Indivisible is inspired by classics like Valkyrie Profile and Super Metroid, but with the unique character, world, and gameplay depth Lab Zero is known for, and will feature a stunning soundtrack by legendary Japanese game music composer, Hiroki Kikuta.

Overview

Indivisible is a side-scrolling RPG in the vein of Valkyrie Profile, spanning a huge fantasy world inspired by our own world’s various cultures and mythologies.

Players will navigate beautiful environments using a variety of different traversal abilities, and engage monsters in fast-paced combat.

Longtime hardcore fan of Valkyrie Profile here. I played Indivisible for about an hour or so.

So, what do I think of the game that wants to take Valkyrie Profile mechanics and add a bit of action elements to the mix?

... it blows. HARD.

It's a good thing they released the prototype, because it is a master class in a great idea gone horribly wrong. Here are just a few things I found bad in this prototype:

1. Why is there a landing recovery regardless of jump height in a 2D sidescrolling action game? It breaks flow every time I have to try to jump. It might work if this was a game where a jump was a strategic choice, like Classicvanias or fighting games, but it does not have a place in Metroidvania/VP-esque sidescrollers.

2. Can we not keep switching the Square/Circle characters' buttons every time I have to switch facing? I tried the Alt Controls, and they are just so damn unintuitive.

3. The best thing about Valkyrie Profile's combos was the ease by which you did them (aka, mash 4 buttons like wild, or time them right). In Indivisible, they also require you to press Up or Down to get an additional attack. It's fine if you only have 1 character, but having 4 characters requires too much skill and micromanagement, aggravated by the fact that you have an ATB (more on that later).

Besides, literally every character only has 1 useful attack, and it's the Up Button. Yes, even Bow guy.

4. On the subject of attacks, so many attacks push enemies back so far that it ruins any combo potential.

5. Whose bright idea was it to put the fights on the exploration map? If one of your characters get hit and throw up a platform, they are inaccessible for the rest of the fight. Which you can't run away from really quickly, because everything is real-time ATB.

6. Speaking of the ATB, the way the ATB works along with blocking and attacking is unbelievably flawed, and adds nothing but tediousness to the game. This is what happens when you have people who think the ATB system is the answer to everything: not only will your combos be interrupted mid-combo (!) because it's the opponent's turn, but you may have to burn your Iddhi meter just by blocking because you had to wait for your ATB.

7. While we're on the subject of the Iddhi meter, not only are the abilities lackluster (map a heal that drains your entire block bar WTH), it drains far too fast when blocking. That's fine if most attacks are individual-based; you can master how to time your blocks. But bosses rarely target 1 character, and they AoE hard. You'll be left just using your Iddhi meter for blocking and nothing else.

Take note that these are just a few of the things I found bad in this game, mechanics-wise. Art and music are great, but the game at its current stage is so bad, I can't recommend it.

I have, for the longest time, been wanting either a Valkyrie Profile game, or a spiritual successor to Valkyrie Profile: Lenneth, one of my favorite PS1 JRPG's. But this? No, I don't want it. They pasted a bunch of tedious mechanics that really don't bring anything new to the VP formula, except for a lot of tediousness. Will not support until they change the mechanics.

Game is really awesome. Definitely one of the more unique games I have seen. Hopefully it gets funded. I'll be close, but I think they can do it.

BTW here's a link to the game's current party members http://labzerogames.com/indiv-incarnations/

Edit: Fully funded
