Are you participating in National Novel Writing Month this year? Why or why not? Have you participated in the past years, and if so how did you do?

The first year I participated in nanowrimo, I completed a 50,000 word novel but I felt it had some significant weak areas in the story telling based on the rush to complete 50,000 words by the end of the month. I put it aside and promised to go back and edit/rewrite it - I never have.

The second year there was an upheaval within my family so it was harder to write. Even so, I think I wrote one chapter and then just lost my motivation for the story.

Last year I tried again and failed again because I realized only 10,000 words in that I didn't like the story concept any more.

This year, I'm thinking of trying again but with a fanfiction for my current favourite crack pairing in an alternate universe setting. I wonder though if it would be easier to not have them be those characters at all and merely share their physical appearances for the sake of taking the story in whatever direction I feel like.

I was thinking about freewriting the 50 000 words. Thinking it as a form of practice and then see later, if it'd be worth polishing. x)

Maybe fanfiction - not sure yet... Maybe original text. I just want to see what my 50 000 words in 30 days would look like. Curiosity is overpowering me.

I've put it off for a few years after a dismal attempt that only resulted in about 10k words before I lost interest, but I'm thinking I'll give it a go this year and just work on something I've already gotten a solid 4k of writing into. I'm not really a planner in the responsible writer sense, so let's see if I've at least learned to stick with something.

If you've never done it, I recommend it. It's an interesting experience.

-_-() I know that feeling. I'm always impressed that I managed to finish nano even once without hating the plot line before the end. This time I'm using an idea I was going to write anyway but I feel like it would come out better if I wrote it at my own pace.

It is just a little bit scary. : )

I mean it's a draft. It'll be riddled with errs and sentences that don't make any sense. Plus you probably use way too many words to describe simple things where there probably exists just a single word to describe it. I'm really scared to put something like that up for everyone to read. ;~~;

Don't worry about people expecting it to be good. We all have our bad days when we have to write whatever we can manage. Even if it's not worth polishing later, it's a great way to try out novel writing with way less pressure.

I once got stuck because I didn't know how to make two characters meet in my successful nano story - so I wrote the stupidest thing I could come up with because it was better than nothing. He was beaten up by a caricature of a pimp. That will definitely have to be rewritten, haha. Don't be afraid to write nonsense if you need to. You can go back and take it out entirely after the month is over and you have your word count.

Gonna try to anyway.

I've been doing this for three years now and last year I actually made it to at least 10,000 words before I punked out. Hopefully I can make it past that this year.

I've always been a bit of a deadline writer type, even when doing papers in college so maybe the pressure will do good for me. At least this go, by doing something I've already got planning for, I'm hoping for the right mix of direction and panic to actually finish it off

My biggest worry at the moment is whether I'll have enough time to write and research the things I need to write it.

As a side note: I looked for it and my first and last successful attempt at nano was 10 years ago!!! I read though the first twenty pages or so, and it actually isn't a bad story. I might go through and fix it. I can probably turn the pimp into some random street person without too much trouble.

You could always just Hemmingway it? That's my plan.

One all-nighter later... 16790 words, 1/3 of the goal! Whoo... zzZZzzZZzzZzZZz

I also realized that my country has this friendly contest against Canada in NaNoWriMo. So as a newbie, I'm apparently running a pretty good score here. xD

I know of Hemmingway, but not well enough to figure out what that means. *dunce cap*

That's amazing! It's a good idea to get ahead when you can so that if there's a day or two when you're too busy to write then you're covered. I haven't even started mine yet, but we were talking about it last night at our halloween party and my friend said I had to join so that she had a buddy other than her mom writing... lol.

Hey, does anyone want to be buddies on the web-site? (I think that's what the friend system is called).

That is some awesome advice, and before the end of this month I may have to do it.

Words to live by that's for sure.

And speaking of words, just about broke 4k today, so that's where I'll be stopping for the day. The fact I put up that many while this hungover should be amazing in and of itself.
