In most anime and manga, it seems like every time someone get's stuck in the rain, or left out in the cold... the next day they are sick. Usually with a fever. Do they really get sick that easily in Japan?

Well it's been proven that Japan has a fairly high rate of anemia as compared to other countries, and that can affect the immune system.

Also , being cold can't make you sick. But being cold can restrict white blood cells in the body, which can increase susceptability to sickness. The rainy season in Japan is a hell of a lot of rain, but I live in Washington State so I kind of scoff at that issue in anime. However, keep in mind that buildings in Japan are generally not heated, and rarely have proper insulation. So couple perpetual wetness with a rather difficult time being able to dry off, and you will likely see greater rates of near hypothermia in people. And that could indeed lead to problems.

So the crazy anime colds aren't complete horseshit. They're only mostly horseshit.

I can't quite linguistically parse the second half of that , but yes, Japan has that mix of urban density and hypochondria to make germ-filtering surgical masks a common, even fashionable, sight on Tokyo streets during the winter months.

masks actually give you a higher chance to get that cold

Wouldn't the Japanese diet have something to do with this? The old terminally ill mother story seems quite common but I wonder how common it actually is in Japan. Also:
