By pretending that the way that they've developed the characters throughout the first season didn't happen or was somehow totally different from how it was actually portrayed.

It's important to remember that just because a studio does a sequel doesn't mean that the people who made the first season will still be involved with it. Which means that it can become a very different vision and story based upon who is writing, directing, and storyboarding the new season.

Have they confirmed the staff yet? All I know for certain is that Yamada won't be back for S2.

Not yet, more info will be revealed soon. Studio will definitely be Kyoto Animation still though.
