I have never seen any of the old Gundam shows, but my friends say the new simulcast Gundam is really good (compared to a lot of the other old ones). Do I need to watch any old series for this new series to make since? Or can this be more of a stand alone show?

Mobile Suit GUNDAM Iron Blooded Orphans is a completely stand alone series. No previous Gundam knowledge is needed. So watch and enjoy!

Bloodied Orphans is stand alone.

It looks pretty good but I doubt it'll end up being seen as the best in the franchise by a lot of people.

There are a couple stand alone series they don't involve the UC timeline. This series is also a good stand alone and is short compared to 50 episodes of typical Gundam shows

No, it's set in a stand alone universe. Unless you're watching the second season of Seed, Zeta, or first few incarnations, there's no need.
