Midori Days. Oh, I remember seeing a lot of "Japanese cartoons" on television and such. I even thought some of them were pretty solid artistic accomplishments. Dominion Tank Police, Robot Carnival, Ghost in the Shell, Cowboy Bebop, Inuyasha, Evangelion, &etc. Good stuff, would recommend. And that's all they were, to me; good shows, bits of nerd ephemera to go along with my CS degree and random stuff to splice between talking about Doom and Star Wars and Discworld. So I was back from college for a bit, job hunting and the like, chatting with friends on the internet. One of them was basically the anime taste-maker in my circle of friends for the longest time (he's still sore that we didn't jump on early fansubbed FMA before it got licensed in NA), and as a joke he directed a few of us to this show.

I'm pretty sure Midori Days broke my brain.

I don't know if it's something unique to that show or if it was just the last straw, but it's been down hill ever since.

It was either Clannad, Rosario Vampire, or School Rumble. They were all on Netflix at the time so it's hazy now as to which I actually watched first. But I definitely got pretty hooked after I watched those 3.

Sword Art Online

I watched the first episode, and then the second episode, and then the third episode at my high school's anime club.

At the end of the third episode, I wanted more. I didn't have enough hand I was craving to know what was going to happen next.

Then I watched episodes non-stop until I caught up with the broadcast. Then I went to watch it weekly.

After that ended, I started to look for more anime to watch, and (insert long story here) which is how I came to like anime.

that's a hard question... anyway to be more specific? I mean I been watching anime since I was 5/6 yrs old maybe younger and the animes I first watched is what kept me watching. Even tho they weren' my favorite animes....

I guess every scenario is different but in your case the question can be rephrased to "what was the first anime that you became obsessed about?"
Personally it is Angel Beats, it caused me to only like anime that is romantic, and tragic and usually the more I cry after its over the more I'd recommend it

Honestly the closest i probably ever gotten was with Clannad which put me on the long road of harems, shoujo's and rom/coms.
Because everything else i just watched it thinking "oh, this was great there can't possibly be a larger world out there." Let's face it a lot of people have this mind set unconsciously or not just latching onto their favorite series.

But i think this falls in line with the question regardless since this is what it lead to.
My answer would be the Muv-Luv visual novel trilogy after reading the series i was impacted by it not only helping me on the road to get over my depression but i was so deeply impressed with the author's approach for the series that it got me interested in the world beyond just Muv-Luv.

Ultimately it even lead me to watching the sports genre which i had no interest in, made me go from mecha/sci-fi being something i thought was alright to ultimately loving it the most watching the first shounen-ai ever made and just all and all giving anything and everything a chance. Overtime come to realize anime/manga has different flavors waiting to be discovered in different genres as well as time periods. Heck something as simple as the concept of an unfaithful adaptation didn't even click to me at the time.

Now here i am 4+ years later and my list has taken a gigantic boost of 1,000+ and counting.

But even if i was entertained and liked Project a-ko, Dragon ball z, Evangelion or even Berserk (even if it did leave an impact) none of this lead me to loving anime as a whole, but i did however re-watch Evangelion a year ago and now it's my favorite anime.

Well I watched DBZ when I was a kid, but to me it was just another cartoon back then.

The first anime I sat down and watched as an anime was Accel World. A friend of mine had talked me into it. Up till then i was all meh, silly Japanese cartoons! Then He talked me into watching One called Magikano. But It wasn't till I saw Another was i really hooked. After that I dove straight in. I love Horror/Supernatural stuff!
