Anyone hear about this story, or got the letter in the mail?

https://www.opm.gov/cybersecurity/#Services

Apparently the Chinese hacked OPM and now anyone that had a background check or applied to jobs for the government had all their info stolen.

Question is....is the story legit or not. Apparently they are offering free credit monitoring by signing up for MyIDCare, but who it to say the credit monitoring is fraud? I never even heard of it before.

What do you guys think? Anyone here effected too, or got the letter in the mail about it???

I mean, I've had a background check from purchasing a firearm so I suppose my SSN will be sold to a Javier.
Eh, Javier sounds like a cool guy anyway.

The chinese have been hacking us since the early days, they routinely attack our governments networks so it is probably true. Looking for holes or info that can get them on our secure networks. But yea dont doubt these reports, if anything they rarely tell everyone how much was really breached. We have been in a cyber war with china for well over a decade, they continue to steal from our corporate entities and government. I quit working for the government almost a decade ago but recall several major breaches of Chinese originzation, and i have yet to receive notification of my ssn being stolen but ive moved a ton.

This is old news here in the DC area. Yes, I got the letter from OPM. I think I got it sometime in July which honestly was already 2 months too late to do much good. The credit monitoring is set up on a contract with an existing company - but the Govt. set it up special which is why it has the stupid name no one has heard of outside of those who got the letter. I called and asked a few questions before logging into it.

Apparently there were also some scammers who used the opportunity to send a fake letter with a bad link in it so they could phish for the personal info of people who'd already had their info stolen from OPM. They just sent it to everyone they could find an email address for that had a govt. email address. A lot of agencies have their directories of employees online so that scam hit a fair number of people too.

I remember that ordeal. I work as a Cyber Security Analyst and we had a few employees get those scam emails. No one was dumb enough to mess with them though thankfully.

I think that's like biting the hand that feeds you considering our debt problem. And sanctions really just hurt the middle and poor class the rich can more than likely move around those. But either way everybody is more than likely hacking everyone we say China is hacking us and China says the U.S. is hacking them...both are probably true.

It always amuses me that people expect the government, let alone corporations, to protect their data. Nope. Once you see some of the saps the government employees, you'd understand how unsafe you really are.

If the Chinese want my SSN, they can pay me with a good job, at least.

Yeah, right.

Yeah. This is a true story...and an old one at that. It mostly affected government workers.
