This sounds interesting. Personally, I would like to see more original content, but just the fact that western companies are getting more interested in Anime has a lot of potential.

I kinda doubt that Netflix's influence will be benign. Anime not made for a Japanese audience will not be what anime fans expect.

Netflix has been doing awesome with their Original Series. Daredevil, House of Cards, Orange is the New Black, and Narcos have been all been great shows. And it's not like a western studio making an anime-ish series hasn't been done before, Hello Last Airbender/Legend of Korra. So I'm confident Netflix can produce something good given their track record.

There's also RWBY.

I'm mostly curious about how it's going to look. Usually "western" anime is better at plot and originality rather than animation style.

I Think Netflix, has the potential. First of all they stream authentic anime. Please no cheap American inspired anime that appeared here in the early 2000`s.

Man this could be amazing. The japanese animators wouldn't be worried about pleasing the japanese psychos that keeps them in business

Yeah, if the shows they grabbed already are anything to go by, they'll probably be focusing on things that aren't "too Japanese" if that makes sense. Knights of Sidonia is set in space, so it has a neutral setting and Japanese names aside, I think Western audiences can buy into that show rather easily, at least the first season. And Seven Deadly Sins is a fantasy action/adventure series with rather decidedly not Japanese names, so it is really easy to buy into.

The wildcard here is Ajin, as that is the one I know the least about(though I guess I could rectify that, since CR has the manga.....).

But at least for Seven Deadly Sins, it's still very shounen-esque (it's a GREAT shounen mind you) so it's Japanese in nature, but I get what you mean. They probably wouldn't develop an idol show for example or a SoL show (well, who knows they may dive their toes in that. A SoL show by Netflix would certainly be interesting, though it'd probably be more dramatic). They'll be focusing on animes with more flare and not so much lighthearted moe shows which are pretty popular with the Japanese base and not so much here. I could see CR doing that for some of their shows, but not Netflix. Netflix likes drama shows and action shows which is fine because their shows are very good and I bet they'll try to go for animes that are in similar categories.

Now Ajin is a senin and is pretty dark and serious like Parasyte, it should appeal to a lot of people, especially to western fans. So it definitely fits the bill of what I was talking about above.

Great idea. You could go for an art style similar to fantasy artists like Frank Frazetta or Ken Kelly, both known for doing artwork based on Robert E. Howard's stories. Plus to do justice to Conan or Red Sonja, they should be dark and edgy, certainly M rated material. Also would love to see H.P Lovecraft's stories get made into anime too.

Wasn't even considering that art style when I thought of it but that would be awesome. Sadly, I think gritty animation like that has already seen it's day with every thing being CG today. As far as Lovecraft...well....we all know what happens when you put tentacles in anime.....

I think Cthulhu is more interested in taking over the world than having a hentai moment.

These are actually the ones I think of when 'western anime' are brought up, I think I actually enjoy all 3 of these more than some Japanese anime. And the style difference definitely shows you the difference since Avatar, Korra, and RWBY focused on story with very little service vs several current Japanese anime where its all about the service. Not to mention how female characters are done in them. And Korra actually has did a same-sex relationship in a respectful/good way, instead of making it about service appeal (not to mention that she's a strong female main character). Maybe this will be how actually good yuri/yaoi will get made/adapted.

So yeah, tl;dr I agree with both of you and its why I look forward to more 'western anime'.

It depends on how they go about it, to be honest. If the idea is to put money behind actual anime studios in Japan as a producer, and to have some of the control that brings, that sounds great, bring it on. Maybe even get some Westerners to come up with story outlines or offer directorial input.

But if they're looking to make Western pseudo-anime projects, then no thanks. I feel as though Western shows that are INSPIRED by anime can be great (like Avatar and Korra, natch), but if it's explicitly marketing itself as anime or trying to be just like anime... well, god bless and RIP Monty Oum, but RWBY is not very good. And the less said about things like Kappa Mikey or My Life Me the better.
