I love anime with intense, action-packed scenes of wit, not violence - with occasional comedy. A great soundtrack would be a plus as well as lifelike characters who are well developed.

Here are some of my favorite anime:

- Shokugeki No Soma
- Chihayafuru
- No Game No Life
- Kuroko no Basket
- Haikyuu!!

Thanks!

Akagi Evil Genius type in Yakuza run mahjong death matches.

Blast of Tempest - Has a big multi episode battle of wits near the middle of the show.

Horizon in the Middle of Nowhere - While the show is a SF action comedy, the high point of season one is actually a really smart debate. Has Ecchi.

Log Horizon

Kaiji - Battle of wits involving an MC who is not a genius.

Maoyu - Instead of fighting the Demon King and the Hero team up to try to end a huge multi-generational war.

Spice and Wolf - Fantasy involving medieval economics.

Some of these only have a few of the characteristics you listed but of the shows I've seen, these are what popped into my head...

  • Arakawa Under the Bridge (It's a bit of a strange one, probably not what you're looking for but I'm throwing it in anyway since it has comedy, wit, and interesting/strange characters.)
  • *Baby Steps (Technically I haven't seen it myself, but from the reviews I've read I'd say it's one you'd love.)
  • Bakemonogatari (I've only just started this show, but there is witty dialogue.)
  • *Barakamon
  • Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-kun (Full on comedy)
  • *Silver Spoon
  • Spice and Wolf
  • Steins;Gate (Has a more sombre tone, but it has well developed characters, occasional comedy, scenes based on wit, and a nice soundtrack.)

* best fit (in my opinion) based on your description
